TJBS celebrates International Jazz Day with the debut of “The Great Albums Concert Series” Saturday, April 30 with two shows, 6:00 and 8:30 pm.
The Tennessee Jazz & Blues Society (TJBS) will commemorate International Jazz Day with the debut of its Great Albums Concert Series on April 30th at the Nashville Jazz Workshop’s Jazz Cave (1319 Adams Street in Nashville’s Germantown district). Showtimes are at 6:00 and 8:30 pm and advance tickets can be purchased at www.jazzblues.org.
The Great Albums Concert Series will present classic jazz and blues albums in their entirety, performed by top local artists.
The April 30th concert in Nashville will be headlined by vocalist Dara Tucker, saxophonist Rahsaan Barber, and trumpeter George Tidwell. as they interpret the classic 1961 Capitol Records release, “Nancy Wilson & Cannonball Adderley.” The recording teamed the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, by then established jazz stars, with a young singer who had just moved to New York from Ohio, Nancy Wilson. The project is considered by most critics and fans to be one of the classic jazz albums, gaining critical acclaim for Adderley and Wilson. Wilson went on to win three Grammy Awards later in her career and was honored as a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master in 2004.
Since 2011 International Jazz Day has been chaired by UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova and UNESCO Ambassador and Grammy Winning composer/pianist Herbie Hancock to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people all across the world. This year’s international celebration global concert on April 30th will take place at the White House in Washington, D.C.
Here in Nashville, tickets for each TJBS show (6:00 and 8:30 pm) will be $20 for the general public, $15 for TJBS members, and $15 for high school and college students.
