ASCAP Sponsors Writers’ Night Series…
Showcase packets are now available in Massey Room 213 (2nd floor Massey Business Center)!
For those of you who are freshman and don’t know what the ASCAP Writers’ Night Series is all about, allow us to explain…
The ASCAP Writers’ Night Series is composed of six showcases divided up throughout the year (which equals 3 showcases each semester). The showcases are held in the Curb Cafe on Tuesday nights and start at 6pm. Each showcase will feature three Belmont Student writers who have written and can play their own songs along with a well known music industry writer. In the past we have had such writers as Katie Herzig, Rivers Rutherford, and Craig Wiseman, just to name a few.
We are very pleased and excited to announce our first guest writer this year is Steven Curtis Chapman. Mark your calendar for this semester’s Writers’ Night Series showcases:
Tuesday, September 11 Curb Café
Tuesday, October 2 Curb Café
Tuesday, November 13 Curb Cafe
We know some of you write and perform and others of you simply play in your dorm/bedroom with the door closed, no matter what genre of music you like/play/write it is all welcome in the ASCAP Writers’ Night Series! So open up those garageband programs or borrow a neighbor’s computer and record your songs so you can submit them! They don’t have to be fancy recordings; all they need to be is your voice with a piano or guitar. We look forward to hearing your songs!
All packets are due Aug 30th in Massey Room 213 by 4pm sharp!!

NEW COURSE – 2007 Fall: “Music Copyright Infringement in The Courtroom” (MBU 4990)
Professor: Dr. E. Michael Harrington / Tuesdays, 3:30 – 6:15 PM
This new and unique course will cover music copyright infringement as it is treated in federal courts, as well as specific issues including sampling, interpolation and replay, independent creation, borrowing, referencing, fair use, parody and the First Amendment. Important related forms of intellectual property – right of publicity, trademark and unfair competition – will also be included.
Students will learn the mechanics of a music copyright infringement action – what happens after the songwriter/artist/publisher suspects that his/her music has been infringed, the evaluation of the music involved, the determination of the strength of a copyright infringement suit, how discovery and depositions take place, what issues and parties should be involved in discovery and depositions, what is involved in a trial, an out of court settlement, how litigation can be avoided, and related issues.
During the semester, students will participate in moot court by comparing a pair of songs to determine whether or not there is a copyright infringement. Students will prepare a case for their side, present evidence, exhibits and witnesses, and give oral arguments in moot court.
Musical examples in the course will be drawn from numerous musical genres including rock, country, rap, hip hop, R & B, urban, jazz, electronica, folk, world music and classical music, as well as music used in advertising, television and film.
No prior knowledge of copyright and/or intellectual property is required for this course.
