{"id":727,"date":"2012-05-10T20:59:29","date_gmt":"2012-05-11T02:59:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/?p=727"},"modified":"2012-12-26T12:44:06","modified_gmt":"2012-12-26T18:44:06","slug":"mission-to-guatemala-2012-day-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/2012\/05\/10\/mission-to-guatemala-2012-day-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Mission to Guatemala 2012 &#8211; Day 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mission to Guatemala 2012<\/p>\n<p>Feliz Dia de Madre!\u00a0 Today is Mother\u2019s Day in Guatemala.\u00a0 We all got this message at 4 am with a 5 minute blast of fire crackers in the courtyard!<\/p>\n<p>The team headed to Tecpan \u2013 a rural farming village about 2 hours west of the city.\u00a0 We teamed up with JT Childrens Foundation \u2013 an organization that provided physical and occupational therapy for kids. 1\/2 of the team stayed at the foundation assisting with therapy and the nurses gave CPR training.<\/p>\n<p>The other half went out into a community in the mountains. We were at Melvin\u2019s home. Melvin is a 14 yr old kid with CP. His home is on top of a steep incline \u2013 maybe 200 meters from the main road. Melvin walks down the stairs to the main road to get to therapy.\u00a0 The stairs have been washed smooth over time. His handrail\u2026.barb wire! Yikes.<\/p>\n<p>We spent the day cutting out new stairs and installed a rope for a hand rail.\u00a0 Pretty good day of manual labor.\u00a0 We did of course find time to play with all the kids.\u00a0 Spanish is the 2nd language in this area. the main language is a Mayan dialect of Q\u2019eqchi.\u00a0 Super nice folks.<\/p>\n<p>After work we headed into Antigua were we will be for the next 2 nights.
