{"id":5336,"date":"2019-10-07T13:16:47","date_gmt":"2019-10-07T19:16:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/?p=5336"},"modified":"2019-11-05T07:06:54","modified_gmt":"2019-11-05T13:06:54","slug":"physical-therapy-students-volunteer-at-garretts-hero-run","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/2019\/10\/07\/physical-therapy-students-volunteer-at-garretts-hero-run\/","title":{"rendered":"Physical Therapy Students Volunteer at Garrett\u2019s Hero Run"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"td-post-sharing-top\">\n<div id=\"td_social_sharing_article_top\" class=\"td-post-sharing td-ps-bg td-ps-padding td-post-sharing-style2 \">\n<div class=\"td-post-sharing-visible\">\n<div class=\"td-social-but-text\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"td-post-content\">\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><a class=\"td-modal-image\" href=\"https:\/\/news.belmont.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_9776-e1570472504512.jpg\" data-caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"entry-thumb\" title=\"Garrett Hero Run group photo\" src=\"https:\/\/722694.smushcdn.com\/1292217\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_9776-696x448.jpg?size=696x448&amp;lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1\" sizes=\"auto, (-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio: 2) 1392px, (min-resolution: 192dpi) 1392px, 696px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.belmont.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_9776-696x448.jpg 696w, https:\/\/news.belmont.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_9776-1392x896.jpg 1392w\" alt=\"Garrett Hero Run group photo\" width=\"539\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>On Oct. 5, several Belmont University Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students volunteered at Garrett\u2019s Hero Run, a 5K event to raise money and awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.\u00a0\u00a0Garrett Sapp, the event\u2019s namesake, has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and \u00a0is the son of Belmont DPT alumna, Amber Sapp (\u201905), and her husband, Randy Sapp.\u00a0 The annual event is organized by the Sapp family to raise money for a nonprofit organization called Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD), which is the largest nonprofit organization devoted solely to ending Duchenne.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Christi Williams, associate professor in the School of Physical Therapy at Belmont as well as a fellow 2005 alumna and classmate of Amber\u2019s, shares Garrett\u2019s story with current PT students at the start of each fall semester. \u201cI feel strongly that there is something special here at Belmont, and we refer to it as the \u2018Belmont PT Family.\u2019\u00a0 This \u2018family\u2019 serves to support you when you need it most,\u201d Williams states.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Each year the DPT students show their support by heading to Maury County Park in Columbia, Tennessee to participate in Garrett\u2019s Hero Run.\u00a0 The students dress in super hero costumes and cheer for all the runners while directing them through the course.<\/p>\n<p>This year there were more than 20 DPT students at the race to support the real hero of the day, Garrett.\u00a0Amber noted, \u201cIt\u2019s so encouraging to know that our support system includes Belmont PT students and alumni alike coming together for such a great cause.\u00a0It gives us hope to know that despite our circumstances, we are not alone in our fight for a cure.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Oct. 5, several Belmont University Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students volunteered at Garrett\u2019s Hero Run, a 5K event to raise money and awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.\u00a0\u00a0Garrett Sapp, the event\u2019s namesake, has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and \u00a0is the &hellip;
