{"id":5016,"date":"2018-09-28T12:59:51","date_gmt":"2018-09-28T18:59:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/?p=5016"},"modified":"2018-11-06T15:48:31","modified_gmt":"2018-11-06T21:48:31","slug":"school-of-nursing-names-lettie-pate-whitehead-scholars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/2018\/09\/28\/school-of-nursing-names-lettie-pate-whitehead-scholars\/","title":{"rendered":"School of Nursing names Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholars"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-thumbnail\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.belmont.edu\/newly-created-lettie-pate-whitehead-scholars-named\/nrsing-students\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Nrsing students\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/news.belmont.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Nrsing-students.jpg?resize=650%2C276\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Belmont University recently announced the inaugural group of the Lettie Pate Whitehead scholarship recipients, a gift given to six students from the College of Health Sciences and Nursing.\u00a0These six nursing students will participate in 32 hours of community service and will participate in high-impact leadership development in both curricular and co-curricular spaces through the University\u2019s new Office of Leadership Development.<\/p>\n<p>Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans was a generous philanthropist and accomplished businesswoman. She was the wife of Joseph B. Whitehead, one of the original bottlers of Coca-Cola. At his death, she assumed management of his business affairs, establishing the Whitehead Holding Company and the Whitehead Realty Company and leading the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Atlanta. She also became one of the first female directors of any major U.S. corporation when she was appointed to the board of The Coca-Cola Company in 1934, a position she held for nearly 20 years. To those who knew her well, Mrs. Whitehead\u2019s greatest legacy was her genuine concern for others.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Atlanta lawyer Hughes Spalding wrote of her, \u201cGreat works of Christian charity do not come out of the blue like a stroke of lightning. They require the inspiration of a gentle and guiding hand. They require the tender touch of goodness, implanted in their hearts by a deep sense of obligation to our neighbor and by the love of God.
