{"id":4963,"date":"2018-08-01T14:06:32","date_gmt":"2018-08-01T20:06:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/?p=4963"},"modified":"2018-08-21T06:39:13","modified_gmt":"2018-08-21T12:39:13","slug":"nursing-students-participate-in-behavioral-health-internship-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/2018\/08\/01\/nursing-students-participate-in-behavioral-health-internship-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Nursing Students Participate in Behavioral Health Internship Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-thumbnail\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.belmont.edu\/nursing-students-participate-in-behavioral-health-internship-program\/bhip-2018-students-nurse-educators\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"BHIP 2018 students nurse educators\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/news.belmont.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/BHIP-2018-students-nurse-educators.jpg?resize=650%2C276\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>For the past seven weeks, four Belmont University nursing students participated in the Behavioral Health Internship Program (BHIP) 2018, a partnership between Tristar Centennial Medical Center-Parthenon Pavilion, Skyline Madison Hospital and Belmont. A $16,000 grant, awarded to Belmont by The Promise of Nursing for Tennessee\u00a0Nursing School Grant Program &amp; administered by the Foundation of the National Student Nurses\u2019 Association, enabled the students to receive a stipend. Funding for the grant program was contributed by several hospitals and health care agencies in the Tennessee area, Johnson and Johnson and other national companies with an interest in supporting nursing education.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This project was created\u00a0to acknowledge and emphasize shortages of behavioral health nurses &amp; increase interest in this specialty area. Students were paired with nurse preceptors for an additional 248 hours clinical hours and completed three 12-hour day shifts each week. They also had the opportunity to rotate to different units at both Parthenon Pavilion and Skyline which serve a wide variety of patients with a variety of medical and psychiatric diagnoses.<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor of Nursing Dr.\u00a0 Folds said many things contributed to this program\u2019s success including the students\u2019 values and the investment and commitment of the TriStar Health Care Leadership Team, Belmont\u2019s Associate Dean of Nursing Dr. Martha Buckner and the Undergraduate Director of Nursing Dr. Sandy Murabito.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe nurse preceptors and interprofessional team that mentored these students showed extensive investment which ensured the success of the BHIP 2018,\u201d Fold said. \u201cThe students\u2019 experience was extraordinarily positive and rewarding while encouraging openness and their ongoing interest in pursuing behavioral health nursing as a specialty upon graduation.
