{"id":3309,"date":"2015-02-27T15:16:24","date_gmt":"2015-02-27T21:16:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/?p=3309"},"modified":"2015-02-27T15:16:24","modified_gmt":"2015-02-27T21:16:24","slug":"pharmacy-faculty-member-publishes-book-chapter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/2015\/02\/27\/pharmacy-faculty-member-publishes-book-chapter\/","title":{"rendered":"Pharmacy faculty member publishes book chapter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/KinninghamSmall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3296\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/KinninghamSmall.jpg\" alt=\"KinninghamSmall\" width=\"81\" height=\"116\" \/><\/a>Associate Dean of the College of Pharmacy Dr. Kelley Kiningham recently published a chapter titled, \u201cManganese Superoxide Dismutase\u201d in the book \u201cManganese in Health and Disease.\u201d Kiningham\u2019s chapter summarizes studies from the last 30 years on the antioxidant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The mitochondrial enzyme is one of three superoxide dismutases in humans; however, it is the only one that is essential for life.\u00a0 The enzyme has been shown to be protective in\u00a0<i>in vivo\u00a0<\/i>models of adriamycin, methamphetamine and taxol toxicity.\u00a0 In addition various researchers, including Dr. Kiningham, have shown that expression of manganese superoxide dismutase is a tumor suppressor.<\/p>\n<p>Clinical trials based on the work of Kiningham and other researchers in the field have lead to the development of synthetic drugs based on the MnSOD enzyme and are currently being tested in a variety of conditions where oxidative stress is known to occur.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Associate Dean of the College of Pharmacy Dr. Kelley Kiningham recently published a chapter titled, \u201cManganese Superoxide Dismutase\u201d in the book \u201cManganese in Health and Disease.\u201d Kiningham\u2019s chapter summarizes studies from the last 30 years on the antioxidant.
