{"id":2039,"date":"2013-04-17T14:21:53","date_gmt":"2013-04-17T20:21:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/?p=2039"},"modified":"2013-04-29T14:16:03","modified_gmt":"2013-04-29T20:16:03","slug":"pharmacy-professionals-students-gather-at-roundtable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/2013\/04\/17\/pharmacy-professionals-students-gather-at-roundtable\/","title":{"rendered":"Pharmacy Professionals, Students Gather at Roundtable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Round-Table-Photo-1b-300x199.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2040\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px;\" title=\"Round-Table-Photo-1b-300x199\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Round-Table-Photo-1b-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a>Twelve local, clinical pharmacists and pharmacy residents spoke to Belmont students during a roundtable discussion April 15 in the Massey Boardroom.<\/p>\n<p>Students enrolled in the College of Pharmacy\u2019s Ambulatory Care Pharmacy elective listened to professionals from health institutions, including Vanderbilt, Saint Thomas and the Veteran\u2019s Affairs Tennessee Valley Healthcare System shared their experiences in pharmacy practice.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Twenty pharmacy students rotated through the tables and were given the opportunity to ask questions to gain a better understanding of the role of ambulatory care pharmacists and the value of pharmacy residency training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked one participant \u2018what is the best part about your job working in a pain clinic?\u2019 She said she liked working with a diverse patient population and having a real impact on patients\u2019 lives. She never would have imagined working in a pain clinic, but she really loves it,\u201d said Meghan Duquette, a second-year pharmacy student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe variety of different pharmacists as well as having residents in PGY1 and PGY2 gave a variety of topics to be discussed and a variety of questions to be answered,\u201d said second-year pharmacy student Nicholeah Lay. \u00a0\u201cI am very thankful for this opportunity. \u00a0It got me thinking more about my concentration as well as what I really want to do after graduation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashton Beggs, the course coordinator of the Ambulatory Care Pharmacy elective, was delighted with the turnout of the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a great experience for these second and third year pharmacy students. We were fortunate to have so many local pharmacists and residents give of their time to discuss the multitude of career paths available following graduation from pharmacy school. This is an event I will continue to host for students year after year,\u201d Beggs said.<\/p>\n<p>Third-year student Gena Curl said, \u201cIt was a great experience and I really enjoyed it. It was a nice way to casually talk with our future colleagues and learn about future residencies and careers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students enrolled in the Ambulatory Care Pharmacy elective have spent the spring semester focusing on topics pertinent to primary care, including financial considerations, patient education, medication adherence, health literacy, and technology available to patients and health care providers. Common primary care disease states, such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma, and pharmacists\u2019 impact on the treatment and understanding of these conditions have been addressed in the course as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Twelve local, clinical pharmacists and pharmacy residents spoke to Belmont students during a roundtable discussion April 15 in the Massey Boardroom.
