{"id":1849,"date":"2013-03-03T20:16:44","date_gmt":"2013-03-04T02:16:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/?p=1849"},"modified":"2013-03-22T15:02:29","modified_gmt":"2013-03-22T21:02:29","slug":"mission-to-guatemala-day-1-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/2013\/03\/03\/mission-to-guatemala-day-1-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Mission to Guatemala: Day 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Mission to Guatemala<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>from Lisa Haack<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>A team of students, faculty and partners from Belmont University&#8217;s School of Occupational Therapy and School of Physical Therapy are ministering in Guatemala during Belmont&#8217;s spring break, the seventh year a team has traveled there.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/LisaHaack.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1850\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px 10px;\" title=\"LisaHaack\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/LisaHaack.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"81\" height=\"117\" \/><\/a>All three flights came into Guatemala without problems Saturday.\u00a0 Much to our surprise everyone \u201cpassed\u201d immigration and no pat-downs were required.\u00a0 Guatemala welcomed us with weather that reminded us of home\u202645 degrees and windy!\u00a0 Burr!!!\u00a0 In contrast, the reception was warm and we all settled into our rooms.\u00a0 We were grateful for the amenities including flushable toilets and a warm shower.\u00a0 It was a restful sleep with an occasional celebratory fireworks launched from near-by. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Morning brought us many new adventures.\u00a0 After a great breakfast (Thank you the ladies who prepared our food!) we were welcomed by Elim Church.\u00a0 Pastor Hector Nufio welcomed us with a prayer in his office.\u00a0 Church members kindly served us the most delicious coffee and Guatemalan sweet bread before the morning service.\u00a0 During the service, Pastor Hector Nufio publically welcomed our group in front of the church and had the congregation come up and pray for our team.\u00a0 The worship service was very jubilant and moving.\u00a0 Even without fully understanding all the words we could feel the Holy Spirit moving through his people. (A big \u201cthank you\u201d to the translators for their diligence in translating during the service!)\u00a0 Pastor Hector Nufio reminded us that we are all have a purpose that God has called us to and it is our responsibility to act on it.\u00a0 The word spoken today gave us inspiration for our new team name\u2026\u201dCatalyst\u201d.\u00a0 We are the catalyst brining God\u2019s love to the least of these.\u00a0 At the end of the service Pastor Hector Nufio invited our team to come up and pray for the members of the congregation who needed prayer.\u00a0 Many tears were shed and hugs of comfort were shared.\u00a0 All were grateful for our team coming to bless those in Guatemala.\u00a0 In the midst of this we were blessed many times over, many of us realizing our purpose of being here!<\/p>\n<p>To say the least Las Conchas is \u201coff the beaten path\u201d, eventually the paved road ended and we were surprised by how well our van drivers held the rocky, sandy, cliff bound roads. (Many thanks to our van drivers!) Following this exhilarating ride, we spent time visiting with community members and playing with children.\u00a0 We were welcomed into many homes and asked what their needs were.\u00a0 Many asked for prayers for the health of their family, provisions for food and education, and healing from deep wounds.\u00a0 Team members volunteered to lead prayer for all families who invited us into their homes.\u00a0 One particular home we visited was particularly memorable, the home of Carlos and his mother Martha.\u00a0 A steep cement ramp was recently constructed outside of Carlos\u2019 home to aide with his transport into the community.\u00a0 Before this his mother would carry him up a very steep, rocky hill.\u00a0 His family invited us in to look at his living quarters.\u00a0 It was determined that some more modifications would be needed to improve the quality of his life.\u00a0 We will pass this information along to the next team.\u00a0 All families visited were grateful to the Shalom Clinic and our team for the provisions, love and prayer given to them.\u00a0 We ended our community outing playing soccer with the children of the community.\u00a0 Wow, do they have some amazing talent here!<\/p>\n<p>Well, that\u2019s Day 1 from Guatemala City.
