Komen Race for the Cure.\u00a0 Over 100 student volunteers assisted with course set-up and take-down, served as course marshals throughout the course including the start\/finish line, provided water at course stations, and handled crowd management.\u00a0 The event drew over 26,000 participants and spectators on a cold and rainy Saturday in late October.\u00a0 The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is a nationwide effort to raise funds to help end breast cancer forever.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Michael Voight, professor of physical therapy at Belmont, was co-chairman of this year&#8217;s Nashville Komen Race.\u00a0 Dr. Voight is a longtime supporter of the organization and for years has brought PT students to help coordinate the annual race.\u00a0 Voight says, &#8220;I chose to support Komen because 75 percent of every dollar raised in the region stays in Middle Tennessee and provides grants to other area non\u2010profits.\u00a0 These local organizations are working on the front lines to battle breast cancer, educating all of us on the value of early detection and promoting awareness to low\u2010income and non\u2010insured individuals.\u00a0 To date Komen Greater Nashville has provided more than $3 million in screening, treatment and educational services to the women of Middle Tennessee.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Komen2012A.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1335\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px 10px;\" title=\"Komen2012A\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Komen2012A-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Komen2012A-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Komen2012A.jpg 519w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Weeks before the event, students in the School of Physical Therapy prepared over 8,000 race packets for participants that had signed up for the event.\u00a0 As the day of the race neared, many students were involved in the preparations required for an event of this magnitude.\u00a0 Then on race day, over 100 students showed up at 6:00 a.m. to begin preparations for the day.\u00a0 According to Voight, \u201cit was amazing the work going on long before participants started coming in, everyone braving the rain and cold, putting on the last minute preparations and then the cleanup.\u00a0 It was no small effort.\u00a0 It was worth it though to see so many survivors happy to have finished the race, whether running or walking.\u00a0 It was one more victory against this disease.\u00a0 This would not have happened had it not been for all help provided by the students\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Dr. Voight&#8217;s involvement, fellow faculty member Dr. Pat Sells also helps lead the race volunteer program.\u00a0 Dr. Sells reflected on the day:\u00a0 \u201cThe manner in which our students conducted themselves overwhelms me.\u00a0 They were kind, energetic, dedicated, willing to do whatever was asked of them, and most of all, they were smiling and enjoying the day.\u00a0 It was evident they were happy to be there and giving back.\u00a0 I received so many positive comments about them, I was truly proud to be considered as part of their team.\u00a0 The small army of Belmont PT students managed a race course of 26,000 people\u2026.flawlessly!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Komen2012F.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1336\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px 10px;\" title=\"Komen2012F\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Komen2012F-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Komen2012F-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/forum.belmont.edu\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Komen2012F.jpg 337w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The Komen affiliate members had nothing but positive words for such a great group of young adults. \u201cThe team of volunteers from Belmont School of Physical Therapy made a huge difference in this year\u2019s race,\u201d said Komen Executive Director Patty Harman. \u201cThe Race would not have been so successful without them.\u00a0 We had more people participate this year than ever before, and Belmont jumped in to do whatever was needed to make it a wonderful experience for each person. We can\u2019t thank them enough for all they did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lynn Edwards, chairman of the board for the Komen Affiliate, expressed words of appreciation for the Belmont volunteers: \u201cThank you so much for your every effort, through planning efforts, logistical team packing and mailing and hand\u2010outs, and last but not least Race Village clean up.\u00a0 This was truly a magnificent event on Saturday. The Sea of Pink was overpowering.\u00a0 We saw so many people that have been impacted by breast cancer.\u00a0 We saw those still in the midst of their healing, those that had been survivors for many years, co-survivors and those there in support of someone that they knew or love.\u00a0 It was such an emotional event for all involved.\u00a0 We appreciate those who helped with making this a success for them and their family and friends.\u00a0 I am so grateful to all of you who have helped with this year\u2019s event.\u00a0 We cancer survivors and co-survivors understand the gift of you time in a unique way.\u00a0\u00a0 Cancer can hit anyone at any time.\u00a0 Not only is it a major shock to the individual receiving the diagnosis but also to the entire family of those caregivers and ones that love you through the many days of doubts, treatments and sickness. The Board, Komen Staff and I owe you everything.
