\n7th Annual Family Literacy Day (03\/31\/07)
\nBelmont’s 6thAnnual Family Literacy Day will take place outside on the patio and lawn between Wright\/Maddox and the Beaman Student Life Center\/Maddox Atrium weather permitting, or in the Belmont Heights Church Fellowship Hall if it doesn’t. Activities include Reading Circles, Books, Games, Crafts, Refreshments and Fun! Belmont Students, Faculty and Staff volunteer to promote the joy of books and reading to children and families in the Nashville Community. Volunteers are needed in a variety of areas, including set-up and clean-up the day of the event. Community Service Convocation Credit is available for volunteers. \nLuis Palau City Fest – Operation Compassion (04\/21\/07)
\nJoin Luis Palau Nashville City Fest and the YMCA to make Helping Hands, an Operation Compassion project, a reality on April 21, 2007. We will locate economically disadvantaged homes in the Middle Tennessee area; all you have to do is volunteer your time for the day. No experience required.

\nHabitat Youth United Build (Weekends of June 9 \u2013 July 1)
\nNashville Habitat is going to build our first ever Youth United house. In this project, youth fundraise and build a Habitat house. The Youth United build will show Nashville that Belmont youth can make a real difference in their community. It also allows young people to take an active role in spreading awareness about substandard housing and the importance of providing people with the opportunity to purchase simple, decent and affordable homes.

\nGulfsouth Youth Action Corps (June 11 \u2013 July 20)
\nThe Gulfsouth Summer Youth Action Corps is comprised of a national network of college students who are dedicated to rebuilding youth services and opportunities in the hurricane affected areas of the Gulfcoast Region. Corps members commit to a summer of service that will engage, inspire and empower local youth through the Gulfsouth Summer Youth Action Camp. The Gulfsouth Summer Youth Action Camp is an intensive 6-week long (beginning June 11th), holistic, cutting-edge, youth leadership program designed for students entering grades 5-8 (middle school) that focuses on Social Justice; Youth Empowerment; Community Diversity; and Service-learning.

\nWe are a small community center located in East Nashville and serve 60 kids in grades K-12 in our after school program. We would love to have some interested Belmont students volunteering with us! Our first priority is helping kids finish and understand their homework. After that, we have prepared enrichment activities for our volunteers to work on with the kids. Many of our students are refugees from Somalia, so a lot of what we do is helping them catch up in school\u2026 and even get ahead!

\nDowntown Presbyterian Church
\nVolunteers needed to help serve lunch to the homeless and urban poor every Wednesday from 12:00 – 1:00. We need volunteers every Wednesday to help set-up, serve, wipe down and such afterwards. Nothing strenuous. Volunteers begin arriving about 12:00 (we actually begin serving about 12:15-12:20) and everyone is pretty much done by 1:00. We generally serve close to 250.
\nOn Sundays we have breakfast for the homeless and urban poor. We need volunteers to help serve and cook, etc. Volunteers begin arriving about 7:15-7:30 and are done by 9:30.
\nOpportunity also exists for someone want to do a ministry intership and assist with initial interviews for folks seeking assistance from the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund. This is a more advanced option – not for someone who’s simply looking for a chance to do something on a short-term basis.

\nHelp us make sure our hungry neighbors have access to the food they need. As a Second Harvest satellite, we operate a very busy food bank and need help packing food boxes during our hours of operation. Lunch included! Great company! Fun working environment! We currently have Monday & Thursday, 9am-1:30 pm shifts available and we always need substitutes who can fill-in when our regularly scheduled volunteers need a day-off!

\nProject S.H.A.R.E. (Supporting Healthy Attitudes Regarding Education)
\nProject S.H.A.R.E. volunteers provide support; guidance and assistance to help at-risk children (K-4) succeed in school. Volunteers become caring consistent adults in the child\u2019s life.
\nVolunteer Opportunities:
\n* One-on-One Mentoring
\nVolunteers meet with a child one hour a week at his\/her school. The time together may be spent working on homework, playing a game or having lunch. The mentor becomes a positive, consistent adult in the child\u2019s life.
\n* English as a Second Language:
\nChildren in Metro ELL classrooms with limited to no English speaking skills receive assistance from Spanish speaking volunteers to assist with the translation of assignments and other educational instruction.
\n* Safe at Last Presenters:
\nUsing a child friendly curriculum, volunteers spend 30 minutes a week (4 week commitment), teaching children necessary skills to identify and cope with unsafe situations such as bullying abuse and bullying.

\nVolunteer Opportunities with Ten Thousand Villages
\nWe have 2 jobs handled by volunteers: unpacking orders and working on the sales floor. To unpack orders, you need to be available to come on short notice. FedEx will give us a date that a shipment will arrive, but not a time. (Shipments arrive Monday – Friday, no weekend deliveries.) So when it comes in we need people who can come in, help unpack and check in orders. This is a dirty but fun job. Volunteers who work on the floor need to come to 3 one hour training sessions to learn policies, procedures, history and philosophy of Ten Thousand Villages. The shifts for working on the floor are 4 hours long. I like people to commit to volunteering at least 8 hours a month. Our store hours are Monday – Saturday 10 -6.
