Music Business Program Launches "Belmont East"
17 Students Selected to Live, Study and Intern in New York City
Belmont University's College of Entertainment & Music Business announces the launch of Belmont East, a new program for selected music business students to spend a semester living, learning and working as interns in the entertainment industry in New York City. The fall-semester program is modeled after Belmont West, a similar spring-semester program the university has operated for several years in Los Angeles. In New York, some of the students at Belmont East are already interning at MTV, BMI, Madison Square Garden and Sony Music.
"From the beginning I've felt that students in the Mike Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business should be educated in an entrepreneurial environment with a global view," says Jim Van Hook, Dean of the Curb College. "Belmont East in New York City is strategically another step in bringing that vision to reality. A semester of internships, classes and numerous enrichment experiences in the Big Apple will have lifetime implications for the students involved in this exciting program."
Dr. Michael Harrington, professor of music business at Belmont, is the faculty member in residence at Belmont East this fall, teaching courses on the Entertainment Industry in New York and on Legal Issues in the entertainment industry.
"We have also recruited two very prominent adjunct faculty members," reports Van Hook. They are: Bill Thomas, former artist manager and former director of public relations at ASCAP, who will teach Artist Management, and Steve Leeds, a SIRIUS radio consultant and former vice president of promotion and of new technologies for Universal Records, who will teach Record Company Operations.
The 17 Belmont students are living in the New Yorker Hotel, where three floors have been converted to student housing. The hotel is just two blocks from Madison Square Garden.
Belmont East is open to music business students who are juniors or seniors and enrolled for at least 12 hours, have earned a C or better in five specific classes, and have an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.
