Outspoken Political Commentator Julianne Malveaux to speak at Belmont
Popular and outspoken political commentator Julianne Malveaux will speak at Belmont University on January 20. Her appearance is sponsored by the university's New Century Journalism Speakers Series, as part of activities on campus to honor Martin Luther King Day. Dr. Malveaux also will speak at 7 p.m. in the Massey Concert Hall, as the keynote speaker for Martin Luther King Day activities on campus. Her evening speech, titled "Living Her Dream," is sponsored by the MLK Committee and the Communications Studies Department.
Dr. Malveaux, an economist, author and commentator, is a writer whose work appears regularly in USA Today, Black Issues in Higher Education, Ms. magazine, Essence magazine, and The Progressive, and a syndicated columnist whose weekly columns appear in numerous newspapers across the country including the Los Angeles Times, the Charlotte Observer, the New Orleans Tribune, the Detroit Free Press, and the San Francisco Examiner. Dr. Malveaux also appears regularly on CNN, BET, C-SPAN, MSNBC and CNBC
Dr. Malveaux will speak at 10 a.m., Tuesday, January 20, in Meeting Room A in the Beaman Student Life Center on the topic of how the media covers diverse populations. The event is free and open to the public and the news media. Journalists, educators and students are invited and encouraged to attend.
"Dr. Malveaux is a gifted educator and journalist who has been empowered to reach millions of people through her media appearances, books, academic appointments and speaking engagements," said Dr. Sybril Bennett, executive director of Belmont's New Century Journalism program. "She is an intellectual, an inspiration and an insightful visionary who uses the art of critical analysis to engage all who will listen."
Belmont University's New Century Journalism program is designed to prepare students to work in newsrooms across broadcast, print and online media platforms.
