Belmont Celebrates Black History Month

In honor of Belmont’s commitment to diversity, the university will celebrate Black History Month during February with a series of programs planned to emphasize the history and achievements of African Americans. All of the events listed below are open to the Belmont community and general public at no charge.

Black History Month Exhibit
Display will focus on Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement

Wed., Feb. 4
Marian Wright Edelman
Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund, is a graduate of Yale Law School and began her career in the mid-'60s as the first black woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar. She served as director of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund in Jackson, Mississippi before moving to Washington, D.C. in 1968 as counsel for Dr. Martin Luther King’s “Poor People's Campaign.”

“Race Matters”
Dr. Peter Kuryla will discuss the book Race Matters by Cornel West. Sponsored by the Black Student Association.

Wed., Feb. 11 at 10 a.m.
“What is Whiteness and What is Blackness?”
Dr. Lucius T. Outlaw, Professor of Philosophy and African American studies at Vanderbilt University will discuss his beliefs on how to eliminate anti-black racism in the U.S. Sponsored by the Black Student Association.

Mon., Feb. 16
Importance of Reparations
Dr. Andy Watts will discuss reparations and their importance today. Sponsored by the Black Student Association.

Wed., Feb. 18 at 7 p.m.
Movie Night: Great Debaters
Great Debaters tells the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, played by Denzel Washington, who leads a group of African American debaters against Harvard University for the national championship. Sponsored by the Black Student Association.

Fri., Feb. 27 at 10 a.m.
“From the Motherland to the Promise Land”
Performance by Sherry Miller Bishop will retrace the rich history of the African American worship experience. Sponsored by BSA in partnership with Residence Life.
