Video Series Highlights Political Personalities from Memorable Presidential Debates

In celebration of the 2008 Town Hall Presidential Debate, Belmont University is launching “Great Moments in Presidential Debate History” on the university’s official Debate 08 Web site, www.belmontdebate08.com. This new video component features political personalities discussing their experiences with candidates vying for the nation’s highest office. Frank Fahrenkopf, former chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC) and current co-chair of the Commission on Presidential Debates is the first “Great Moments” participant in the series. A new video will roll out each week leading up to the debate at Belmont on Oct. 7, 2008. Next week, Roy Neel, Chief of Staff for the Honorable Al Gore, will be featured on the site.

“‘Great Moments’ is an innovative learning tool, providing a behind-the scenes, inside look into the preparation that goes into presidential debates,” Belmont University’s President Bob Fisher said. “As informed citizens and voters it is our responsibility to understand why these debates matter; ‘Great Moments’ brings the lessons from past debates to life through the voices of the people who helped shape them and our nation’s history.”

NewsChannel 5, Nashville’s CBS affiliate, has partnered with Belmont to produce the “Great Moments” series. A slate of politicians, journalists, scholars and consultants are lined up to participate. The questions include:
• What is your most memorable debate moment?
• How do you prepare a candidate for a presidential debate?
• What has been, for you, a defining moment in the history of presidential debates?
• Why are debates important to voters?

Future ‘Great Moments’ interviews will include former campaign staff, advisers and media professionals, including: John Seigenthaler, James Carville, Mary Matlin, Senator Lamar Alexander and Chuck Manatt. The videos will rotate on the Web site as they are produced.
