Freshman Lands Spot in Top 10 of National Contest

DSC_0080.jpgBelmont University freshman finance major Landon Austin began playing music at a young age in his hometown of Dallas, Texas, and it appears that his years of practice are starting to pay off. Austin was recently chosen as one of 10 semifinalists from 352 video entries for the MySpace/Doritos “Crash the Super Bowl” Music Video contest.

Austin’s performance video for original song “Waitin’” was viewed more than 1,370 times and received numerous favorable comments. Judges—including Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.I.Am, producer Jack Joseph Puig and Geffen Records’ executive Ryan O’Donnell—chose the 10 semifinalists based on creative inspiration, musical ability and stage presence.

The next round of finalists will be determined by fans who are allowed to vote once per day at www.myspace.com/doritoscrashthesuperbowl until Dec. 31. Fans must be a MySpace member to vote, but registration takes less than a minute. For more information, visit http://landonaustin.com.

Three winners will receive a trip to a Super Bowl XLII viewing party in Phoenix, Ariz., as well as $10,000 cash prize and a limited distribution deal with Interscope Records. The Grand Prize winner will also have portions of a newly-shot music video aired as part of a Doritos commercial during the Super Bowl XLII live telecast and will receive a $5,000 advance pursuant to the terms of a recording contract with Interscope.

Studying finance in preparation to “pay the bills,” Austin intends to pursue a full-time career in music. He said, “I have always had a love for music. I feel blessed to have this opportunity, and with the support of everyone, this competition may give me the means to share my music.”
