Belmont Embraces C.S. Lewis in Conference, New Book
The Southeast Regional Conference of the C.S. Lewis Foundation will meet at Belmont University on Sat., Sept. 15, 2007. Titled "Faith Set Free: C.S. Lewis and the Quest for Joy," the conference will feature addresses from Lewis scholars Joseph Pearce, Stan Mattson and Andrew Lazo in addition to a screening of newly released documentary, C.S. Lewis: Dreamer of Narnia. Mattson and Lazo are also scheduled to speak at a special convocation on Fri., Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. in the Massey Performing Arts Center. In other C.S. Lewis news, two Belmont professors contributed to a new collection of scholarly essays, Past Watchful Dragons: Fantasy and Faith in the World of C.S. Lewis, that released last week. The volume, edited by adjunct instructor Dr. Amy Sturgis with a foreword from School of Religion Dean Dr. Darrell Gwaltney, provides a broad sample of the research presented at the C.S. Lewis international conference held at Belmont University on Nov. 3-5, 2005.
The contributing scholars reflect a truly interdisciplinary discussion representing the fields of literature, theology, history and popular culture. The assembled essays offer insights on the messages of C.S. Lewis’s fiction and nonfiction, the dramatic adaptations of his work, the influence of his faith, and his relevance to related fantasy literature and authors as contemporary as J.K. Rowling. Early reviews note the book offers essays imbued with "authority and grace" reflecting "vibrant conversations" from "seasoned and fresh voices on a wide range of topics."
