Belmont's Hare Earns Conference's Highest Academic Honor

Justin Hare resized.jpgAdding to his growing list of accolades, Belmont University junior Justin Hare was named Atlantic Sun Conference Male Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Wednesday, June 6.

The Cleveland, Tenn. native, who was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second Team in March and the Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association Scholar-Athlete Team in April, has developed into one of the most decorated student-athletes in the history of Belmont Athletics.

Hare sports a 3.85 GPA in his major of exercise science and health promotion and plans to attend medical school upon graduation. The 6-2 guard will return for his senior season as First Team All-Atlantic Sun and a two-time Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP.

Hare becomes the third male Bruin student-athlete to receive the Atlantic Sun’s highest individual honor, joining fellow basketball standouts Wes Burtner (2002) and Adam Mark (2003, 2004). Interestingly, Hare ranks third on the Bruin career scoring list (NCAA era) with 1,275 points, behind only Burtner (1,833) and Mark (1,574). He was also the third-fastest Bruin player to score 1,000 career points, doing so in 74 games.

Moreover, Hare participated in Belmont sponsored mission trips to Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela and Kiev, Ukraine. He holds memberships in the Belmont University Health & Human Performance Club and the Pre-Professional Club.

Katherine Warden, a cross country and track standout at Gardner-Webb University, was the Atlantic Sun Conference Female Student-Athlete of the Year.

Each of the nominees was required to be a junior or senior in academic standing, have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have attended his or her school for at least one full academic year prior to the current season of competition.

Member institutions nominated one male and one female student-athlete for inclusion in Student-Athlete of the Year ballots. Faculty Athletics Representatives from each school submitted completed ballots to select the winners.
