Belmont Leads 2006-07 Atlantic Sun Academic Trophy Standings after Fall Sports Season

Rivalries in the Atlantic Sun Conference are just as tough in the classroom as they are in athletic competition. On Thursday, January 25, the conference office released its All-Academic numbers for the fall season. Among the student-athletes competing in cross country, soccer, volleyball and basketball, 56 percent (593-of-1064) earned All-Academic status. Five-time winners of the All-Academic Trophy, Belmont leads the way with 63.64 percent of its student-athletes earning fall honors.

Among fall sports, women's cross country consistently holds the advantage. The 10 teams combined accounted for 75.47 percent of all its participants to earn all-academic honors. Cross country is followed by volleyball (68.80 percent), women's soccer (66.23 percent), men's cross country (57.27 percent), women's basketball (47.10 percent) and men's basketball (34.69 percent).

To be named A-Sun All-Academic, a student-athlete must achieve a 3.0 or higher in the classroom during their semester of competition. The sports sponsored by conference members are cross-country, soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, golf, softball, baseball, indoor and outdoor track & field.

The 12-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell, ETSU, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, UNF and Stetson with Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate beginning competition in 2007-08.
