ESPN's Neal Scarbrough Kicks off Spring Journalism Speakers Series
ESPN News Editor Neal Scarbrough, a former sports editor of the Nashville Tennessean, speaks at Belmont University Monday as part of the New Century Journalism Speakers Series for the spring semester. Scarbrough, vice president and news editor at the cable sports network, speaks at 10 a.m. Monday in the Bunch Multimedia Hall on the second floor of the library. Members of the media are invited to attend. Scarbrough is one of a handful of elite journalists speaking at Belmont this spring. [Editor's note, Feb. 13: Scarbrough's Belmont appearance was postponed because of travel difficulties due to the blizzard in the northeast. It will be rescheduled.]
In April Scarbrough joined ESPN's Remote Production unit, where his team oversees news and content for the sports network's live game telecasts. Scarbrough also served as editor-in-chief of ESPN.com from September 2001 through March 2005, supervising the daily editorial operations of the internet's top sports website.
Scarbrough elevated the website's new-gathering, commentary and interactivity while utilizing the site's cutting-edge technology to create an unchallenged sports Internet product. In November 2003, ESPN.com received the Online Journalism Award for General Excellence, beating The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and BBC Online.
The site was a finalist in three categories - General Excellence, Commentary and Specialty Journalism - in 2005.
Neal joined ESPN in April 2000 as a Senior Editor for ESPN The Magazine, where he planned and executed the magazine's s pro football coverage. Before joining ESPN The Magazine, Scarbrough served four years as sports editor for The Denver Post, where the Colorado Association of Black Journalists named him its Journalist of the Year in 1999. Scarbrough also was sports editor of The Tennessean, deputy metro editor and assistant sports editor at the Chicago Sun-Times, and night sports editor of The Seattle Times. He also has held editing posts with the National Sports Daily, Newsday and The Sacramento Bee. Scarbrough is a 1984 graduate of the University of Colorado.
