Jordan-Lake's Book, Whitewashing Uncle Tom's Cabin, Published
Whitewashing Uncle Tom's Cabin, a new book by Belmont University professor Dr. Joy Jordan-Lake, has been published by Vanderbilt University Press. The book - its full title is Whitewashing Uncle Tom's Cabin: Nineteenth-Century Women Novelists Respond to Stowe - explores how women novelists of the first half of the 18th century tried to counter Harriet Beecher Stowe’s classic indictment of slavery, Uncle Tom's Cabin, by preaching a "theology of whiteness" from the pages of their own novels.
Whitewashing Uncle Tom's Cabin also includes a discussion of twentieth- and twenty-first-century novels that revisit plantation mythology, and casts new light on the ethical and moral disaster of securing one group's economic strength at the expense of other groups' access to dignity, compassion, and justice.
Jordan-Lake holds graduate degrees in both theology and literature. She currently teaches writing at Belmont University. She formerly taught English at Baylor University and was co-director of Baylor's Art & Soul religious faith and literary art conference.
