Center for Professional Development Offers "Mini MBA"
Belmont University's Center for Professional Development will launch a new "Mini MBA" program this fall for mid-career professionals seeking to broaden their business skills and expand their knowledge in functional business areas.
"The focus of the Belmont Mini MBA is providing a 'toolkit' for managers and delivering the most vital management topics in a concise timeframe," said Dr. Pat Raines, Dean of the Belmont University College of Business Administration and the Massey Graduate School of Business.
The Belmont Mini-MBA program is intended to provide participants with skills and information they need to keep themselves and their organizations competitive. One night per week, students will be immersed for three hours in a "module" focusing on a single critical business discipline that will provide participants an overview and broad survey of subject areas normally found in a business school degree program.
"This is for business and technical professionals aspiring to improve their business skills and business acumen, mid-career professionals who want to update their knowledge and gain fresh insights to management," Raines said.
The Belmont Mini-MBA is a non-credit program and leads to a certificate upon completion, not an MBA or other graduate or undergraduate degree. Individual weekly modules will be taught by a combination of Belmont business faculty members and what Raines promises will be "marquee" speakers.
The Belmont Mini MBA, with a tuition cost of $2,499 per person, is scheduled for Thursday evenings, September 2 through December 9, from 6 to 9 p.m., in the Massey Business Center at the Jack C. "We benchmarked several successful programs," Raines says, ticking off a list that included Rollins College, the University of Richmond, the University of Missouri, Boston University, Notre Dame University, Rutgers, the University of Minnesota and more. "Then we developed something we think combines all the best elements of these programs and more."
"The Belmont Mini-MBA program is designed to develop and enhance understanding of the functional areas of business, and enable participants to make more informed decisions, via a practical orientation and a guaranteed 'take away' from each module," says Raines.
Topics for individual weekly modules include Legal Responsibilities of Today’s Manager; Customer Loyalty - Getting and Keeping Customers for Life; Business Ethics for Business Excellence; Information Technology; Entrepreneurship within the Organization; Negotiation - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; Understanding Financial Statements - Making Smart Business Decisions; Behind the Numbers - Understanding the Role of Finance in the Organization; Human Resources - Engaging People with Purpose; Improving Your Economics I.Q.; Leadership Beyond Management - Strategies That Work; and Putting It All Together - Linking People, Strategy, and Results.
Raines says the Belmont Mini-MBA was designed for people considering pursuing and graduate degree and wanting an overview of Belmont’s MBA program, for experienced managers seeking a solid foundation in current business theory and practices, for technical professionals moving into management positions and wanting more fundamental management “know-how," and for managers wanting to become knowledgeable in a variety of functional areas in order to advance in their careers..
The schedule for the Mini-MBA program has been tentatively set for Thursday evenings 5:30 or 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., during Belmont's fall semester.
