Expert in Famous Music Industry Court Battles to Speak at Belmont
Stan Soocher, author of the acclaimed book, They Fought the Law: Rock Music Goes to Court, will appear as guest speaker at Belmont University Copyright Society’s upcoming meeting, at 10 a.m. Friday, December 5, in the Lila Bunch Multimedia Hall. Soocher's book recounts many of the music industry’s most famous legal cases involving Elvis, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Ozzy Osbourne and many more famous artists.
The artists faced a wide range of legal troubles from crooked managers and accountants to bad record deals to personal problems, and the book's focus is not the legal troubles themselves but the triumphs of the musicians who dared to fight back, challenge the system and the "man," and triumphed in the corrupt music business world.
Soocher, an entertainment attorney, is also an associate professor at the University of Colorado in Denver, Department of Music & Entertainment Industry Studies. The former Chair of that department, he also I editor-in-chief of the industry trade journal Entertainment Law & Finance, a publication he has headed since its incarnation in 1985. Soocher also keeps busy by speaking across the country at various conferences and events, and his articles have appeared in numerous publications, from the National Law Journal to Rolling Stone.
The Belmont University Copyright Society was formed in the fall of 2003 to promote the knowledge, education and involvement in intellectual property not only at Belmont University, but in the intellectual property community as well. Since its inception, the Copyright Society has received rave reviews from across the country.
The Copyright Society has monthly meetings that cover a wide variety of topics and involve guest speakers and a website updated every morning with the latest news in intellectual property. A newsletter, The Infringer, will be published bi-monthly beginning Spring of 2004.
