University Buys Adjacent Church Property

NASHVILLE, August 27, 2003 – Belmont University has agreed to purchase the property of Belmont Heights Baptist Church adjacent to the campus on Belmont Boulevard for $3 million, exercising a purchase option the university has held for ten years. The purchase, approved Saturday by the university's Board of Trustees, gives the university about 100,000 square feet of additional building space for growth.

Purchasing the building makes financial sense, says Belmont University President Bob Fisher, because "it would be very expensive" to build a similar-sized facility today. ''As we grow, we'll use that space over the next three to four years. We have a lot of freedom now to draw up other possibilities because we have that space. That's a real luxury for us.''

Belmont Heights' congregation will continue to worship in the church, built in the 1920s and located near the university's new Curb Event Center, Maddox Grand Atrium and Beaman Student Life Center.

The university eventually will move its campus ministries and other service-oriented offices onto the four-building church campus. The university's School of Nursing is already located in the church building and the School of Physical Therapy occupies a university-owned building on the 15th Ave. side of the property.
