Belmont Recruits 8-Footer: Fisher Brings Bear to Campus

bear.bmp NASHVILLE, August 27, 2003 – Among the newest residents on Belmont University's campus is one who stands eight feet tall and will be an inspiration to Belmont students, faculty and staff – and a real help to the Belmont Bruins basketball teams. He was introduced to campus Wednesday night in a special meet-and-greet and photo opportunity – an 8-foot-tall limited-edition grizzly bear statue that has taken up permanent residence on a large rock outside the new Beaman Student Life Center.

The bronze sculpture, crafted by Colorado wildlife sculptor Bill Noland, is titled Something in the Air. It shows a grizzly standing on his hind legs, as if sniffing the air and catching the scent of some prey. Standing on the large rock that serves as the statue's base, the bear towers 10 feet in the air.

The limited-edition sculpture – just five will be made –was purchased for Belmont University by the university's president, Dr. Robert Fisher, after he and his wife saw the bear in a gallery while on vacation in Wyoming.

"Nothing about Belmont motivates us more than thinking about our students," said Fisher. "We wanted to give something that students would enjoy, and would bring a sense of fun and spirit to campus. When we saw the bear standing in Jackson, Wyoming, we thought, 'He belongs at Belmont', so here he is!"
