Belmont Claims Second Straight Atlantic Sun Academic Trophy
Belmont University picked up its second consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Champion Trophy, besting its own record of All-Academic honorees set last year by four percent.
The Bruins boasted 69 percent of their student athletes (140-of-203) with a grade-point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale during the past academic year, up from 65 percent in 2001-02. Over all, the Atlantic Sun Conference set a conference high for total number of honorees (1,274) garnering conference All-Academic honors, up from 1,083 last year.
The Bruins women's cross country team led the A-Sun with 11-of-12 runners earning All-Academic honors, while the men's tennis (5-of-6) and baseball (20-of-25) teams ranked at the top of their respective sports in All-Academic honorees. Belmont had six student-athletes earn Verizon Academic All-District honors with Adam Mark (men’s basketball) and Marcos Cabrera (men’s soccer) earning Academic All-American status.
“Academics are a lynch-pin of our program,” stated Director of Athletics Mike Strickland. “It is important to everyone involved from Dr. Fisher (Belmont University President) down through our coaches and administrators to the student-athletes. We are proud to capture the trophy for the second straight year.”
Belmont becomes the third A-Sun member to earn two Academic Champion Trophies, Mercer (1992-93, 1993-94) and former member, Centenary (1994-95, 1995-96), are the others. The Academic Champion trophy is a traveling trophy that is displayed by the champion for the ensuing academic year.
