Belmont Offers Master's in Education at Cool Springs
Belmont University continues to grow as a premier teaching institution in the field of education. Beginning in June of 2003, Belmont will offer a Master's of Education at its Cool Springs location.
The Master's of Education degree is an interdisciplinary graduate program designed to meet the needs of teachers, administrators and others with bachelor degrees who have a broad interest in educational issues within a variety of learning communities. A team of Belmont faculty and professional mentors that blend the best of theory and experience will assist students in planning a personalized curriculum through a combination of coursework, on-the-job projects, independent study, seminars, and workshops.
The focus of this Master's degree is on the student's own workplace and how to make their learning community a more effective organization. The structure is based on a 12-hour Research core, nine hours of Developing Learning Communities and nine hours in Focus Areas. These areas will include literacy, national board certification, technology and special focus of the student's choosing. The 30 credit hour program is planned as a two-year part-time program with a thesis. Classes will be in the late afternoon at Belmont's Cool Springs location, usually with less than 15 students, and will feature a seminar approach that encourages active participation from all students. Practical applications of instructional technologies are embedded within this program.
FOR TEACHERS the degree is designed around the National Board of Professional Teachers Standards and candidates may use the program to prepare their materials to submit for National Board Certification.
FOR STUDENTS from other organizations the program is designed to enhance their leadership skills with a particular focus on developing their learning community.
