Nashville

cocacola.jpg

The lamp posts are like fireflies --
on nights where the stars shine like confetti.

There's an old-man across the street,
strumming his guitar --
no care in the world,
no worries in his heart.

Down yonder, just take a look.
The music notes come alive,
just like a piano note song book.

There's so much to believe,
and so much here to see --
that you'll just never want to leave.

Wait for the train, it's coming.
Be sure to hop aboard,
with hopes and dreams,
and snapshots --

There's just no tellling where you'll go.

Get off and take a stroll,
and race towards the steps of freedom,
where the history of the melody lives --
and everything you've dreamed of.

The world keeps on spinning,
the sky keeps getting bigger,
there's no telling what will happen next,
in a town where everything shimmers.

The cheers, the thunder, the applause.
The goodbyes, the good times,
and what you've learned,
is what is already gone.

Yesterday no longer matters,
because today is what you've waited for.

The open door is here for you,
all you have to do
is walk right through.

I Wish You Could See What I See

cherylblog2.jpg

chrisblog.jpg

The morning started out just like any other ordinary one.

I woke up -- brushed the teeth and grabbed a bowl of Fruit Loops.
(I tell you, you can’t go wrong with those -- the teeth and the cereal.)

Shortly after, I trampled out of the door and walked briskly to the Beaman
student life center.

I did about 30 minutes -- no cardio this time.
But for some reason, my heart was still beating fast.
Must have been for the Lord.

At only 9:30a.m. -- I left and accelerated into an even faster pace.
With my iPod, I’m was jamnin’ to something that must have
came out of one of those remarkable Nashville studios.

With the music, I felt as if nothing was going to slow me down.
Not the wind, not the tune, the melody nor anyone who might come along
in my path.

All of a sudden -- I come to an abrupt halt and ran into a girl with long blonde
hair trying to catch my attention.

We almost collided.

Then comes the hug and a “can-you-give-me-a-ride-to-class?”

I respond with another one of those of-course-I will-do-that-for-you
looks swiped across my face.

After all, I knew she was running late -- like usual.

As we hopped into my 1997 old-fashioned, Oldsmobile Cutlass,
Rascal Flatt’s “Every Day” blasted from the stereo speakers.
And she says to me, “I needed to see you this morning.”

As I grip the steering wheel and push down on the gas pedal,
she says, “Look who it is!”

Immediately, I drive faster -- with an excitement -- promising myself
that I wouldn’t run him over.

Let me clarify, excitement for the music -- the girl in the passenger seat --
and the kiddo walking towards us.

I wondered to myself, “Man, the Lord is awesome.”

It’s not Every Day that a girl captures your attention at just the right moment --
and for the 25-year-old -- well, that’s another story.

Note: The pictures above are the "characters" featured in this real-life story. Cheryl is a rock-awesome friend and Chris (my Resident Director) is the 25-year-old. I have gotten to know both of them by being a Resident Assistant (RA) at Belmont. The Lord placed these two people in my life to help me grow, learn, and become a better person!

What Nashville Means to Me

chrischerylme.JPG

The skyscrapers touch the sky.
The stars shine just as bright --
and the world keeps on spinning.

The musical notes blend into the water.
The ripples fade but no matter what,
The reflection is always right.

It's more exciting than ordinary.
Because anything less is gray.
So it must be a new day.

The old-wooden fence shines against the sunlight.
The iPod thumps as I run.
The run takes me anywhere I want to go.

The morning transcends into evening.
The moon could capture the lens.
Too bad it's too late.

But tomorrow -- well, it's a new day.
To give the rest of the world what little I have.
The hello's turn to dust.
The goodbye's revolve into new relationships.

So here I am.
No longer running.
But spinning towards God.

And, because it's a new day
I have something to look forward to.

Grand Ole Opry: The Show that made Country Music Famous

Untitled-1 copy.jpg

This week has been unpredictable, amazing and hopeful.
I finished finals with a blast. The grades turned out better than expected; and for that matter, the hours of studying for senior level exams was quite worth it.

Now I'm going to cut right to the chase:
This past Tuesday, I had the opportunity of a lifetime to attend the Opry at the Ryman with the lead singer of Diamond Rio. His name is Mr. Marty -- and he is definitely rock-awesome. I am thankful, grateful and so appreciative that the Lord made all of this possible!

Here are my Top 6 moments of the evening:

#1. Driving back and forth to the Opry with Mr. Marty and talking about the Lord, Family, Country Music, Wisconsin, Sonic, Adoption, and Mint-Chocolate Chip ice cream
#2. Standing on the historic stage of the Ryman Auditorium (the mother church of Country Music).
#3. Walking on stage to take the guitar from Mr. Marty when he finished his first song, "Beautiful Mess."
#4. Being introduced to Carrie Underwood, Nan Kelley (Great American Country host) & new-comer, Julianne Hough.
#5. Witnessing the shining lights reflecting against the thunderous applause of the audience.
#6. Realizing that childhood dreams of one day, moving to Nashville and being a part of the Opry really do come true.

Are you searching for your dreams?

If so -- grab a compass, a roadmap, or a journal; and ultimately, realize that you may already be living them.

P.S. Merry Christmas! Make Jesus the Reason this season!

Opryland!

So, apparently, if you have never been to the Gaylord Opryland Hotel, you have never really experienced Nashville. At least, this is what I overheard someone say while I was visiting Opryland for the first time with my boyfriend, Dan, on Thursday. I don't know how I managed to live here for an entire year without ever experiencing one of Nashville's most unique (and certainly largest) attractions...but I am so glad that I finally went!

Dan realized how important it was for me to be introduced to Opryland - especially during Christmastime - so he surprised me by planning a wonderful evening for us there. We started off the evening right by eating dinner at RuSan's, one of my absolute favorite sushi restaurants.Final-Sushi.jpgWhen ordering sushi, Dan and I typically stick to the basic California roll, but we were feeling a bit adventurous and decided to try something different. Our waiter recommended two different rolls. The first was similar to a California roll, but it was topped with a piece of salmon and baked ever-so slightly. We also ordered shrimp tempura (you really can't go wrong with fried shrimp). Between the crunchiness of the shrimp and the creaminess of the salmon...we were in heaven! Best part: the entire meal was only $15. I love RuSan's!

After dinner, we headed to Opryland. I should preface this part of the story by saying that I am a huge fan of all things Christmas. It is, by far, my favorite holiday and I love to celebrate it as far in advance as possible. So when we arrived at the Opryland Hotel one of the first things that caught my attention were the trees leading up to the entrance.Tree.jpgEvery single branch was wrapped in Christmas lights - it was breathtaking. Even more impressive was the inside of the hotel. First of all, it is huge! If Dan hadn't known where to go, I would have had us lost within minutes. There are three giant indoor gardens, each filled with various (living) plants, rivers, waterfalls, jumping fountains, walking paths, and, of course, plenty of places to eat and shop, as well. It was a little overwhelming at first to take everything in! I tried my best not to gape, but it was so hard not to!

After wandering around for a while, and playing Christmas music on a few of Opryland's Yamaha pianos, Dan told me that he had planned for us to go on a private horse-drawn carriage ride. Being a huge fan of Disney movies, and very impressed with Dan's thoughtful planning, I thought this sounded like an excellent idea!Carriage-final.jpgIt was a bit cold, but we wrapped up in blankets and quickly forgot about the fact that our ears were freezing. We took tons of pictures (I had to limit myself to only posting four of them...) and neither of us wanted to get off after we had returned. After the carriage ride, we decided to walk around outside for just a bit longer. Then - as if the night couldn't get any more perfect - it began to snow. It was really more like snow flurries, but that didn't make it any less magical.

We eventually went back inside to warm up by one of the many opulent fireplaces. I didn't want to leave Opryland...but knew that it was inevitable, so we took a few final pictures and headed out. Of course, the perfect ending to any evening is going to get dessert. A slice of chocolate peanut butter cookie dough cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory sounded pretty good to both of us, so we split it.Tree-Final.jpgAfter my date with Dan, I met my friends at the movie theater for the midnight "Twilight" premiere. I loved the books, but I must admit that I thought the movie was a bit of a letdown. I still had a great time (actually, my friends and I had plenty of fun just laughing at how awkward the movie was!) and it was my first midnight movie premiere ever, so that was exciting. Thursday was just full of new experiences! It was a busy day and I was exhausted after we got back at 3 am...but it was completely worth the exhaustion.

Up All Night for the "Wright" Reasons

Living in downtown Nashville it isn't difficult to be entranced by the music filled air of Broadway and seeing Keith Urban on a regular basis. Let's face it... Nashville is an awesome place to live! However, when we see all of the cool tourist spots and the star's homes so constantly, it's sometimes easy to forget the other people who live in downtown Nashville... the homeless.

This past weekend I participated in two events that really changed my perception about homelessness. The first event was a rally to save a local area known as "Tent City" and the second was an event hosted by my staff in Wright Hall called "Up All Night for the Wright Reasons."

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy" - Proverbs 31:8-9

Music in the Soul

Ever since I have come Belmont I have had a new passion for volunteering. I believe it all started at SERVE during welcome week. SERVE is when the new freshmen class splits up into groups and volunteers for several hours all across the Nashville community. My group was sent to a children's home. While volunteering there we did a lot of hard work such as cleaning the bathrooms, mopping the floors, and landscaping. I never really understood before coming to this school, why people gave up their time to volunteer in the community. Through the SERVE project though, I discovered why people choose to do it. I serve because I hope to make an impact on someone’s life. I know I am not going to be able to change the world, but volunteering will make the world a better place.

During a music assembly several weeks ago, a representative from the W.O. Smith Nashville Community Music School asked if anyone wanted to volunteer by teaching private instrumental lessons at the school. I quickly took the offer because I love teaching and playing with other musicians and I also want to get a music education degree. So every Saturday morning I wake up at 8:00 to teach saxophone lessons at the school. The W.O. Smith music school offers students private instrumental lessons for only 50 cents if they qualify for the program. I give half hour saxophone lessons to two 11 year old students, both of whom have never played the saxophone before. I really enjoy teaching them because they both really want to learn how to play. It takes a lot of patience and diligence because learning to play the saxophone takes time and hard work. Its definitely worth volunteering at the school because I am making an impact on someone's life and I am gaining valuable experience teaching at the school.

I would challenge everyone to volunteer during college. You can really change a person's life and you will learn from your experience as well. After a lesson one day, I had a student say to me, "I used to not like the saxophone, I wanted to play the tuba. Now I really like it, its my favorite instrument." Comments and thoughts like this make it worth while to volunteer. I will definitely continue to volunteer here during my college years.

Tennessee.

blakeandi.jpg

Lately – Nashville is really transforming into a place that resembles home. I am so unbelievably happy for the friends that the Lord has placed in my life. Annie Leibowitz once stated, “You can simply change yourself by picking up and moving.” One-year-and-a-half-ago, I did just that. I packed as much as I could into my dad’s shiny-blue pick-up truc, leaving only memories spent with family and the solid foundation which constitutes who I am today. Now, it is the year of two-thousand-and-eight…and here I am.

Looking Forward to Looking Back

facebookprofile.jpg

The bright lights of the city shined brilliantly as I began to descend into Nashville. And for that matter, so did the smile on my face. For some reason, I am confident that this year is going to be much different from last year. I plan to make every moment count as if it would be my last. Furthermore, I definitely want to put forth 110% in school, and in the meantime, set aside time to explore the creative side of photography and writing.

Little Moments. Big Magic.

Last weekend was fall break! It was so wonderful to be able to go back to Franklin and spend time with my family and friends from home. I have to say that fall break did not last nearly long as I would have hoped, but I really enjoyed the memories that were made. The first night back in Franklin, I went to Ellen’s house to watch Pageant Place on MTV. Belmont Alum and Miss USA 2007, Rachel Smith, is one of the main characters. It was a pretty good show. It’s just another reality TV show, but I enjoyed it! The rest of the weekend involved going to events for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee.

Sorority Recruitment and Such!

Last week was Sorority Rush Week! It kept me insanely busy, but it was so much fun! I loved being able to spend time and create great memories with my sisters in Phi Mu. Since I went through spring recruitment, it was a completely new experience for me. It was incredible being on the other side of recruitment. I don't remember myself being nervous when I went through, but I was SO nervous this fall and I'm already IN a sorority! I guess it's mostly because I wanted to make sure that every girl in the room had a lot of fun and that they were all comfortable. My favorite night of the week was "skit night." I was one of the performers!! My sisters asked me to dig down deep into my bag of talents and bring out my rap skills. Well, it was very...umm...interesting. Ha ha. Let me just say that I won't be giving up singing for rapping anytime soon!!

Twenty-One

21.jpg

I’m so excited about life right now! The abundance of homework – well – not so much. This past week I turned the big twenty-one. The events of the day consisted of eating lunch at one of the premeire restaurants in Nashville,
Stoney River. Personally, this is now one of my most favorite restaurants in Nashville-town. It is rock-awesome! I highly recommend it.

As the day went on, my parents sent me balloons to Lyric Street Records. And to make the day even more exciting – my buddy Nick – and my friends – Jess and Jody, took me out for dinner at Logan’s Roadhouse. They are my second family. Jammin’ to the music of Rascal Flatts with the three of the most rock-awesome people ever could not have been better! I was soaring – soaring with bombastic excitement!!! I mean…if that is not a rock-awesome twenty-first…than I don’t know what is!

I know I say this in every single blog so why break the tradition? Life is absolutely crazy-busy. And why in the world is summer going so fast? Will it ever slow down? This week is definitely one of the busiest weeks yet so far this summer. Best Week Of The Summer.....So Far

The past week or two have been really good for me. It''s probably one of the few times that I can sincerely respond "I'm doing great" when someone asks how I am doing. Why, you may ask? First off, I just found out that I now have an apartment for the school year. Even though it is on the fourth floor, I couldn't care less because that means no more living in the dorm, ever. Oh okay I know that I said that "my dorm is way cooler than the apartments," but that's because I forgot what it was like to have your own space. Don't get me wrong the dorms are pretty cool because there is always folks around to hang out with and go to the cafeteria with you, but nothing gets better than Hillside.

Zoe's Kitchen...the best food ever!

photo.jpgWow! I cannot believe that it is already the second week of June. The emerging week of classes most definitely came too soon. And by extension – so did CMA Fest. I can most clearly describe this past week as one complete blur. Throughout the week I attended a multitude of artist events, attended classes, and slept very little. Without a doubt, the “backstage” experiences granted me the opportunity to network and create relations with professionals who represent themselves as advocates of the music industry! I most definitely enjoyed myself, the individuals I met, and the hours of tending to crazy Taylor Swift fans at the downtown Nashville Convention Center.

I need to get back in the gym!

During the school year, I practically live in the Beaman. But towards the end of the semester during finals and this few weeks of summer, I haven't even stepped foot into the workout center. I know that's pretty bad, but can you imagine me trying to play ball after about a month of not playing at all. That's right, you guessed it! I was absolutely terrible, and on top of that I wasn't that good to begin with. The thing that made the whole situation even worse is that I was playing with some complete strangers. But please don't worry... I am big enough to handle myself. IMAGE_128.jpg

Old Friends, Food, and Frogs!

This week has been pretty eventful! I was in Chattanooga for a couple weeks and then came home to Franklin to spend some time with my family, work out, see friends, etc. On Sunday, I was at Green Hills Mall in Nashville in the David Kidd bookstore and who do I see?! Tyler Hilton!! He' a singer/songwriter and he played Chris Keller on "One Tree Hill." He also played my boyfriend on Taylor Swift's video "Teardrops On My Guitar." I hadn't seen him since January when we filmed the video; I didn't expect to see him at the mall!! It was great seeing him again! You can catch him in the upcoming movie "Charlie Bartlett" which will be out this fall.

Here's a picture of Tyler, Taylor, and I at the "Teardrops" video shoot.

Okay, Where is the warm weather?

will.jpg
Originally, I'm from Houston and in Texas extreme cold weather is mid-60s maybe even 50s in a bad year. But on the other hand, in the summer time it can get up to 120 sometimes down in Texas. See, here in Nashville the weather can't make up it's mind. One day is freezing cold and windy, then a couple days later it will be warm enough to wear shorts and flip-flops. I just wish that the spring/summer time would get here already. When it is cold like it is now, the whole mood on campus is different. Things like getting up and walking to class or hanging out with a few friends seem so much better in the warmer weather. Dare I say it, but I kind of miss everybody throwing frisbees and footballs in the quad.

Nashville!

Being in Nashville, it is always possible find something interesting to do. Whether it is a campus activity, a weekly target run, a hockey game, a football game, or a concert downtown, there is always something going on if you look hard enough (and have time for it). About two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to literally fulfill a life dream, and see Josh Turner in concert! My friend Lauren was working with Service Corps (a group of music business majors that helps with local concerts and what-not) and had an extra ticket, so off I went to see Josh Turner. He was amazing, sang all of my favorite songs, and I was in heaven!

Livin' the Dream...

As a sophomore, I can already attest to the fact that college does exemplify the most significant moments of an individual's life. In a recent conversation I had with a great friend of mine, I said to him, “I’m stressed. There’s so much homework. So many things to commit myself to. And moreover, the concept that I’m not even sure what is causing this sense of overwhelmingness.” In response, he stated, “Ben..how can you be stressed? You are livin’ the dream.”

photo.bmpStill today, I cannot believe that I am officially enrolled as a student at Belmont University. My passion and commitment for the music business has enabled me to effectively carry out the plans that the Lord God has set forth for my life. Ever since the conversation with my friend, I have learned to embrace the existence of stress in a healthy and successful manner.

Big City, Small Town, Big Business.

Well, if you guys didn't know I am originally from a small town in Texas called Houston. Ha ha. I moved here to Nashville when I was pretty young, so the city has kind of grown on me. Nashville is a pretty big city, but has a small town feel because of the hospitality and it's easy to find your way around. Sometimes just driving around, I discover new things such as easier ways to get to and from campus and even another part of town I never knew about.
