Bruin Blast!

It has already been 4 months since I have arrived at Belmont University. Time has truly flown by these last couple of months. The leaves on the trees are now changing colors, from green to shades of orange, yellow, and red. It has been getting much cooler lately so I have been making more trips to Bongo Java, the local coffee house, to get my favorite drink the “Apple Pie.” Although November brings new challenges such registering for classes, music juries, and many papers, I am looking forward to attending the basketball games and being a part of Bruin Blast.
Bruin Blast is the pep band that plays for several volleyball games and all of the home basketball games. The gym is usually packed with students cheering for the Bruins. The games are very energetic, particularly this year because of how well they did last season. Last year Belmont’s mens bandatgame.jpg
basketball team won the Atlantic Sun Conference and competed in the NCAA tournament. In the first round of the tournament, Belmont faced the number 2 seed, Duke University. Belmont almost won the game, earning high respect in the NCAA tournament. After this years first exhibition match of the season, Belmont appears to have a great chance of making it to the NCAA tournament again. Last Thursday they easily beat Sewanee with a score of 83 to 27.
Bruin Blast plays a large variety of music during timeouts and halftimes. Right before the home games, the pep band gets to run in as the the announcer introduces us. It is a lot of fun because we get to run in similar to how the actual athelets run in before the game. My favorite part about Bruin Blast is when the entire crowd sings along with our music. Bruin Blast is going to be an amazing experience. GO BRUINS!

A new puppy!!!!

The last month has been SO busy for me! I’ve been trying to balance so many different things. It’s kind of stressing me out, but Spring Break is coming up pretty soon!! I’m very excited to finally be able to rest and just spend time doing absolutely nothing. I, unfortunately, am not going to the beach, but I’m sure I’ll still have fun at home! The best part about SB is being able to take spontaneous trips, so while I say I’m not going to the beach as of now, you never know! I may pack my Vera Bradley bag, put some gas in the car, and head off for a couple days in the sun!

Bruiser’s Sweetheart

I had an absolute blast at the first men’s basketball game of the season! They played the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders. I thought it was going to be a close game, but it wasn’t anything along those lines. The Belmont men completely owned the court! I was very proud to call myself a Bruin that night! I mean, I’m always proud to be a Bruin, but I was ESPECIALLY proud that night!

Sports Highlights

Well, Thanksgiving break is over and it’s time to get ready for finals. Today is Tuesday and I already feel like it should be the end of the week. I guess I didn’t realize how much work I still have to do before the semester ends! This week I’m working on a 10-page paper in addition to studying for my finals and completing a few last-minute assignments. It’s going to be a very busy week, but the end is near!
Thanksgiving was wonderful. I had a chance to spend lots of time with my family, catch up with friends and, of course, eat plenty of good meals. It was still hard to leave my family at the end of the week, but it feels like it gets a little bit easier each time. (It also helps to know that I am going to see them again in two weeks!)

Back where I belong!

I’m finally back at Belmont and I couldn’t be more excited! It took me forever to move into my dorm because I am in the process of recording my demo, so I gradually started the process of moving in on Saturday morning before going to the studio and then finished moving in by Monday night. I love my roommate! Her name is Tori and she is one of the sweetest, most down to earth people and I’m excited to live with her this year! Wednesday was the start of classes, which I hope went well for all the new freshmen and transfer students! I know it can all be a lot to grasp when first coming to a new campus and lifestyle.

Belmont Idol!

After six seasons of American Idol, one of Belmont’s own is finally being represented. As many of you all might know, Melinda Doolittle is a Belmont graduate! She was a Music major here and she graduated in 1999. From the start of the season, she has been recognized as being one of the greatest talents to ever step on the Idol stage. Melinda, a self-proclaimed back up singer, has clearly risen to the challenge and can easily shine in center stage.Melinda Doolittle If you don’t believe me, just watch her sing once. You will be blown away. She, in my opinion, could easily win the whole competition! So everyone should vote for her after every performance!
Another Belmont Alum is doing very exciting things right now. Rachel Smith, who recently graduated in December of 2006, is the reigning Miss Tennessee and will be competing in the Miss USA pageant tonight! Miss USA will aire live from Los Angeles on NBC @ 8:00 pm CT. Good luck Rachel!!

You gotta love it!

curb.jpgIt’s kind of crazy all the stuff that’s been going on around campus lately. Well, of course were still buzzing and proud of our men’s and women’s basketball teams a week ago, but there is just tons of “other” things going on as well. For one, there is the Other Showcase this weekend, which is the last showcase before the “Best-of the-Best” showcase. The showcases are always produced and performed very well by the music business majors. If you take a good look at the picture, the band is “Soul Force” and they were the winners of last years’ Other Showcase. But look really close and there is none other than Melinda Doolittle, a front-runner contestant on American Idol. She was here performing just a couple years ago, now on her way to maybe becoming the next big star from Belmont.

Spring Breakin’ It!

Hey friends!
Last thursday (March 1) I was able to attend the Country Radio Seminar! It was a lot of fun to meet and greet with some of the biggest songwriters in Nashville. Artists such as Jack Ingram and Danielle Peck from Big Machine Records were there as well. There were a lot of performances going on that night, and among these performers were Taylor Swift, Jeffrey Steel, and Megan Mullins, to name a few. Jeffrey Steele is absolutely AMAZING! He is the biggest songwriter in Nashville! Not only has he written some of the biggest hits this year (does “What Hurts the Most” ring a bell?), his performance skills are equally amazing. He can play guitar, piano, he has an amazing voice, and he’s an extremely talented songwriter. Megan Mullins from Broken Bow Records is also a great up-and-coming country artist. That girl can SING! She’s so much fun to watch while she’s singing. She started off by singing while playing the guitar, then she proceeded to put her guitar down and walk over to pick up her fiddle. I was really impressed! Taylor was also very entertaining as usual. She played two of my favorite songs : “Our Song” and “Stay Beautiful”. If ya’ll haven’t bought her CD yet, you should! I highly recommend it!

Belmont is Ballin’!!!!

champs.jpg
Okay, so March Madness is here and just take a guess who’s going dancing? Yep, you already know, two years in a row we’re in the Big Dance, or NCAA Tournament (just in case you don’t keep up). The guys’ team is riding a 7 game win streak into the tournament, so the momentum will hopefully help us out playing a power school in a week or two. I can’t really think of a school right off the top of my head to get a tourney bid around here, wait maybe Vandy this year beating Florida, Memphis is always pretty good but choke sometimes, and the Bisons sorry not quite. But anyways back to Belmont, the guys are getting some good buzz around town with being on ESPN2 for the championship game and one of the players Justin Hare being recognized as a Academic second team All-American. On top of that Belmont has won the Academic Athletic Trophy for five straight years, possibly six with the highest GPA per student-athlete in the A-Sun conference.

So Glad to be Back!

The Byrd Cage
I’m going to kind of miss staying up in the wee hours of the morning, and getting up after lunch time every day. Man, that was the life, yeah for about two weeks or so. As much as I wanted to be out of school and take a break from everything for a while, I just couldn’t wait to get school started again. One reason is because of being able to finally see all of your friends. But the main reason is the BIGGEST game/event on campus, which is the Battle of the Boulevard. For those of you who don’t understand, I’ll just have to explain.
