International Food Hoorah

This week in the Hillside Apartments (on-campus housing) we had an International Food celebration program where we had food from France, Malaysia, Spain, Argentina, and Kenya. All of the dishes were made by Resident Assistants who had studied in each of the countries. We also had the director of the Study Abroad program as well as a representative from 10,000 Villages present.
Seventy residents (many of whom turned out to be from these different countries) enjoyed Chapati, a traditional Kenyan dish; Tortilla Espanola, the Spanish version of a tortilla which is much more like a fritata or crustless quiche than what we think of as a tortilla; Malaysian Popiah, also known as Spring Rolls; French dessert crepes, cooked by yours truly; and an Argentinian specialty called Milanesa a la napolitana con fritas a caballo–or in other words a veal and french fries.
With international music playing in the back ground, it was a wonderful opportunity to discuss Study Abroad trips and the experiences we all had with our residents.

February Fun

It has been abnormally cold in Nashville lately and to keep busy the majority of us have had to come up with fun indoor activities to do while we wait for Spring to arrive!
Thankfully, Valentine’s Day provided the perfect opportunity for the Maddox/Wright dorms to have a lot of indoor bonding time!

Halloween

Pumpkin Picture.jpgOnly a couple more days left until Halloween. It has been getting much cooler lately, and the leaves on the trees have begun to change colors. My friend, Matt, invited me to carve pumpkins in the Pembroke lobby. It was a lot of fun; they had a table set up that had tools for scooping the seeds out of the pumpkin and several knives to sculpt their faces. The best part about the activity was that it was FREE. It was nice carving the pumpkins because I used to back in Missouri every year before I came to Belmont. The warmth I have experienced from other students, faculty, and the environment makes Belmont feel like home.

Let the Games Begin

It’s that time again! I can’t believe classes started over two weeks ago already! Move-In-Day was simply a blur! As an RA (Resident Assistant) I spent a sleepless week with my staff (prior to Move-In-Day) getting our hall ready for our beautiful freshman girls to move in! This year our theme is the movie Enchanted and my floor is Andalasia! Where there were once blank white walls, there are now flowers, trees, and even forest animals all over the walls!
And, more than just the decor, I’m happy to report that the halls are constantly busy with late night girl talk, lots of laughter, and study groups around the clock! It has really been a blessing to get to know the girls living on my floor! I love hearing all of their unique stories and exciting thoughts and plans for the coming years.

The Wright Fit

What a week! I can’t believe it’s gone by so quickly. Last weekend was a blast. It was so good to finally see my parents and I had fun showing them around Nashville! On Friday afternoon my mom and I walked around Centennial Park and enjoyed the TACA (Tennessee Association of Crafts Artists) Fall Fair. There were hundreds of really talented artists showcasing their handcrafted masterpieces. My mom bought me a really pretty sky-blue topaz ring—I absolutely love it! We also shared a bag of fresh, homemade kettle corn…it was a perfect day!

Late Night in TK

So, TK is my dorm. I love living here. So many exciting things go on. This past Wednesday, we had a pirate pancake party and people dressed up like pirates and hung out as pirate music played in the background. There were also free pancakes, which automatically makes any event worthwhile. I think we’re also having premiere night where we’re gonna watch the premieres of new seasons of TV shows like The Office and Grey’s Anatomy. I think the best part about TK is knowing so many people who live in it. As one of 2 upper classman dorms, it’s loaded with sophmores and juniors and a few freshmen and seniors. So pretty much, the party is nonstop. Just the other night, we had a soccer game going on in the lobby past midnight.

Welcome Home!

Well, I’m back at Belmont! I have been for the past week and a half and I am having the time of my life. I have to admit, at first I was a little apprehensive about returning to school, but now that I’m getting into the swing of things I’m falling in love all over again with the school. It’s so weird to come back as a sophmore instead of as a freshman. I’m coming in with eyes that aren’t widening at every aspect of campus (though I did gape in awe as I saw how many new freshmen there are) and I feel like I know everything about the school already. I also already have my group of friends, and so, I’m not coming in with the same fear about being able to make friends as I did freshman year.

Movin’ On Up

“Movin’ On Up” is my personal theme for this year, it’s kinda like the song from the 70′s sitcom “The Jefferson’s.” I say this because of many reasons which include me becoming a junior, moving into a new apartment, and just a different outlook on life. I feel like becoming a junior is very important, especially in college, because this is time when I am finally starting to actually settle down and start thinking about life after school. Things such as upper-level classes that directly relate to my major, which is Entrepreneurship and Marketing, and internships will help shape my interests as far as a possible career.

Best Week Of The Summer…..So Far

The past week or two have been really good for me. It”s probably one of the few times that I can sincerely respond “I’m doing great” when someone asks how I am doing. Why, you may ask? First off, I just found out that I now have an apartment for the school year. Even though it is on the fourth floor, I couldn’t care less because that means no more living in the dorm, ever. Oh okay I know that I said that “my dorm is way cooler than the apartments,” but that’s because I forgot what it was like to have your own space. Don’t get me wrong the dorms are pretty cool because there is always folks around to hang out with and go to the cafeteria with you, but nothing gets better than Hillside.
