It's official...
I am a Spanish major!!!!! It was such a relief to fill out the "Change Major" form and I feel really good about my decision. I met with my Spanish advisor yesterday and after talking with him I am excited about the possibilities for scheduling. Next semester I'm going to take a Spanish film class and a Spanish literature class. Both of them sound great and I can't wait to get started! Also, we discussed the possibility of studying abroad. I have always wanted to visit Spain and I think it would be such an incredible experience.
Belmont's study abroad program in Spain is located in Santiago de Compostela (in Galicia) which is just above Portugal - in the northwestern corner of Spain. I remember studying Galicia in high school and my teacher told us that there is a collection of pilgrimage routes that are collectively referred to as El Camino de Santiago or, in English, "The Way of Saint James." The routes begin in France and all of them lead to the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. El Camino de Santiago has a rich cultural background and religious history that you can read more about here. I remember being fascinated by El Camino de Santiago when I first heard about it, and wanted to walk part of it one day. The entire route is approximately 900 km, or close to 560 miles.
Many people attempt to bike or walk the entire distance, but I think that I would only have time (and energy!) to complete a small portion of it. I wish I could begin my study abroad experience tomorrow, but somehow I'll have to wait another year.
In other news, I am going to be competing in Belmont's Public Speaking Competition next Monday and (possibly) Thursday! My speech class voted for me to go, so I think I'll give it a shot! (Who would have thought that I would be good at public speaking?!) I'm going to talk about the Writers Strike that recently ended and examine the causes and effects of the strike. Although I'm sure I will be nervous this will be a really good experience for me and...I happen to know that there are money prizes involved! Wish me luck!!!
