Hello Summer
One final down, two more to go! In one week from now I plan on being home on Long Island, working in the bagel store that I have worked in for about two years now, and enjoying the company of my friends from home. Yet at the same time, I anticipate that I will miss a lot of things here at Belmont as well. First and foremost, my friends.
I came here knowing nobody. I met my friend Jill at summer orientation when we were both sitting in a conference room learning about financial aid or something like that, and we started talking. As it turned out, we were both Spanish majors! She then introduced me to a girl she had met earlier in the day named Lauren. Since then, we have hung out with each other everyday that we were here on campus. As you can see in the picture, we once got caught in this really bad rainstorm and were soaked to the bone in the 30 seconds it takes to get from the parking garage to Wright Hall.
They are honestly the most caring people I have ever met in my life. I will miss them dearly. I do not know what I will do with all of my time with no Debate this summer! In the Forensics team I have found my Belmont family, and have had some unbelievably awesome times with all of them.
But before I get all sentimental (okay, you are right, too late for that now), there is so much left to do before I leave Belmont. Saturday, I am helping with Fiesta Belmont, a Hispanic festival here on campus on cinco de mayo! I remember attending the festival two years ago when I first visited campus, so it will be fun to be able to help this year! And then... packing. As I look around my less than organized room, I am wondering how I will ever be able to fit all of this into a car and drive home with it. And I probably should study a bit more as well. I can’t let all my work all semester go down the toilet because I was too lazy to open a book. Also, for some breaking news, my roommate (from Chicago) just said "ya’ll." For all of you guys coming here from areas outside of the south, I guarantee that by the time you leave here, you will have some semblance of a southern accent. When I was at a forensics tournament in California, a student from a California school was able to tell I went to school in Tennessee.
I feel compelled to give all you rising high school seniors some advice about coming to college. I know you are getting advice from all over the place, so make of this what you will. Firstly, be sure to bring things like bandaids and headache medicine... stuff I never had to think about back home when it was just in the cabinet in my bathroom. Don't forget sewing materials. It would also be a good idea to get some extra lamps for your room. While I love my room here in Wright Hall, it has a tendency of getting very dark in these rooms, being that the lights are located between the closets (it is hard to explain, but basically the lesson is to just bring some extra reading lights or lamps). And the single most important thing to remember to bring is extension cords/surge protectors. Make sure you get the safe ones that Belmont recommends. Come with an open mind. I was pretty nervous coming here in August, and I missed my home a lot in the beginning. But it gets better, I promise. So, to all of you coming to Belmont this fall, you are going to have the time of your life. Take some classes that you wouldn’t normally take, and have some fun! Enjoy your summer!
