I went... (cough cough) GREEK!
It's Hope here again... and let me just say that if you told me two weeks ago that I'd feel the way I do about college right now, I'd never believe you. Not that I didn't like Belmont at first, but let's just say my first post was a bit more difficult to write. Nothing was specifically negative about my experience, but there also wasn't anything that I felt really passionate about either. I just wasn't my old self and was on very uneasy ground my first few weeks of school....which is to be expected I think from anyone who goes through this big of a transition. Also, I'd just like to make it known that I had absolutely no intention of getting into what I am about to describe to you next. I was completely uninterested, definitely not planning on doing it, and only did it as a last resort, but.................
I WENT GREEK! Yes, I know, a big schocker... but I went through recruitment September fourteenth through the seventeenth and it was the most fun I've had at Belmont thus far. As I mentioned before, I truly did view going through recruitment as a last resort just because I wasn't content with my college experience yet. I thought "Well, I'll just go through recruitment and meet some people by going through it, but I certainly won't join one of the groups when it's all said and done". Well, what do you know! I am currently a "Phi" (which is a pledge for the sorority Phi Mu) and will hopefully be an initiated sister of Phi Mu in the next few weeks. The picture is of all the fall 2006 "baby phis"... I'm second from the left on the bottom row.
Recruitment was amazing. All three of the sororities on campus were incredible. It was so hard to chose between groups because honestly, I think anyone can be happy in any of the groups. And I think it's important to note that Greek Life here doesn't resemble Greek Life anywhere else. The groups don't have houses, they are not as expensive, and they are not as demanding or taxing. Actually, I think it is so much better here at Belmont because each group can be your home away from home. There is no pressure, it does not take over your life, and it can be anything you make of it. What I have loved the most about it so far is just seeing the familiar faces around campus and actually knowing someone everywhere you go and having someone shoot you a smile or wave across campus. As small of an act as it seems, it really makes a difference in your day.
All in all, my experience here has turned around for the better. I don't know what I would have done or where I would be right now if I had not chosen to get involved and go through recruitment. I'm so excited about my experience here now and definitely have a reason to stick around and see what is in store for me next!
