Campus Communications using Online Forums
As a followup to last week's general Staff Affairs meeting it is apparent that a lot us do not know about important forums for communicating information on campus besides general campus emails. A good example is the weekly FYI and the link to that forum is emailed out weekly to the campus. Over the last year ITS has also made the default home page for staff PCs at www.belmont.edu/home. A lot of the news stories from all the forums shows up on the home page...so you don't have to bounce around to keep up. The other nice thing about many of these campus news forums is that there are links on each to each other making it easier to find. So, visit and read them on a regular basis to find out what is going on campus.
Main campus web page for campus information at FYI

Main campus web home page for staff (has news feeds from several forums)

BIC has daily calendar and sports items, as well as news items of interest to everyone.

Kelly's Winning Chili Recipe
Below is Kelly Kane's winning chili recipe which she so graciously shares with everyone at Belmont and yes, more that that, the world. While the recipe is clear, what is not clear is how much art is involved. In her own words, "Remember chili is not science and each batch needs to be tweaked. " So, take heed of Kelly's words, because she is the Champ this year, and practice practice practice for next year's October Chili Contest.
Kelly's Winning Chili Recipe
Chop 1 rib celery, 1 medium onion, 4 jalapeños and 1 serrano pepper and sauté in 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil. Add 1 small bay leaf and 1 clove of garlic.
Add 2 #s of cooked ground beef
2 cans each of dark kidney beans, light kidney beans and chili beans
3 cans of diced tomatoes (include juice for a thinner texture)
¾ cup of water or tomato juice (I like spicy V-8 juice)
3 – 4 tablespoons cumin (based on taste)
6 - 8 tablespoons of chili powder (again based on taste … I like heavy on chili powder)
¼ teaspoon cayenne powder
½ teaspoon ground smoked chilpolte powder
10 drops of Jalapeño sauce
1 teaspoon salt
Simmer for about an hour or until vegetables have lost their crunch.

October Staff Chili Contest-- the Winners are......
Great fun was had by everyone at Friday's Staff Chili Contest. The grand prize went to Kelly Kane of Accounting Services (pictured here with her trophy, crown, and prize package). This is the 2nd year in a row for Kelly, and I suspect she is already planning for next year. In the Hot and Not categories, Paul Chenoweth (ITS) won the HOT category and Andrew Kee (User Services) won the NOT catgory making it a technical staff sweep in the lower division of the Great Chili cookoff. Better luck next year to everyone and a big thanks to the other 14 chili chefs out there.
Thanks also to our judges this year for making this a fun event, and for surviving. They were Eric Burford, Michael Cantrell, Julie Hullett, Linda Mullins, and Christy Warren who used their delicate palates to discern who was the ultimate chili cookers out there.
Thanks to all the Staff Council for a great job. Everyone really seemed to like the music, decorations and especially Charlie Brown on the big screen. (thanks Amanda).
Finally, if you missed the Chili event , shame on you, but there is always next year. So, start cooking and find a great chili recipe, so you can wear the crown next year.

Staff Affairs Meeting- you missed it!!!
About 90 staff came to today's meeting and I think we all had fun. We had special effects and even lost the lights for a few seconds. Several great agenda items were shared too! Obviously, the prizes were fun with a gift card from Borders (thanks Amanda) and even dance lessons. Thanks to everyone who made time. and it is my wish that our next event, SEE BIG CHILI CONTEST , will even be bigger in October. So, mark your calendar now and get out those family chili recipies to win and have fun.

Belmont faculty and staff volunteers sought for Katrina housing relief
In an effort to assist with the hurricane relief efforts Belmont is requesting volunteers to provide housing assistance (i.e. a spare bedroom) for parents of Belmont students who are displaced or affected by the hurricane Katrina disaster in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. In the next few weeks there is an opportunity for the Belmont family to extent their hospitality to the parents of our students affected by this disaster. If you have a spare bedroom or place to accommodate a parent or family please indicate how many family members you can accommodate, for how long and your contact information. The initial need is to support requests from families from the disaster area in support of Parent's weekend (Sept 16-17th). You may email or call me at x5471 by Friday, Sept 9th.
Thank you so much for considering this urgent call to help our students and their families.

Staff Affairs Blog Launch
Well, here it is! Yes, it's a BLOG! No pink or blue stork in the front yard or anything like that...this is a tool for Belmont University staff to share news, information, ideas, and comments. It is a two-way commmunication tool. Stories are posted here on a regular basis (we hope), and beneath each story is a link to a comment form. All comments are moderated which means that someone will see and review the before they are posted...Why moderated? Comments are moderated because this is an open forum, searchable via the Internet, and possibly subject to spam attacks by unscrupulous characters around the globe.
So, look for your Staff Affairs Council news here and join in on the conversation!
