Belmont University Partners with MTA to Offer Additional Commuter Benefits

Belmont University will offer an additional commuter benefit beginning this school year with the addition of the Music City Star, Nashville’s commuter rail system. Any student or employee with a Belmont-issued ID card is eligible to ride either the MTA buses or the Music City Star to and from the campus at Belmont's expense.

Belmont partnered with the Metropolitan Transit Authority last year to offer students and staff free transportation to campus and became the only university in Nashville to offer free transportation to students. The partnership was successful during the last school year, with the total boarding number totaling nearly 12,000.

Belmont University’s commuter benefits program gives Belmont students, faculty and staff an opportunity to save on gasoline, help reduce traffic congestion and improve the environment, while also providing relief for campus parking.

Belmont One of “Nashville’s Best Commuter-Friendly Workplaces”

Belmont University has been named one of “Nashville’s Best Commuter-Friendly Workplaces” by the Nashville Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA). Belmont was recognized along with 22 area companies at a luncheon June 26 at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel. This event showcased how some of the city’s best-known employers are finding mass transit to be a tax savings for employers and employees as well as an affordable alternative to record-high gas prices and commuting.

Belmont University Creates New Community Scholarship

Belmont University created a generous new scholarship program for high school graduates who live in the area surrounding the university. The Community Outreach Scholarship pays 50 percent of a neighborhood student's tuition for up to eight consecutive semesters.

This year’s recipient of the Community Outreach Scholarship is Leslie Bodie. Leslie is a recent graduate of Hillsboro High where she was active in the sports program as team captain of the volleyball team, as well as the recipient of MVP awards for her participation in both the volleyball and tennis teams. She also belonged to Hillsboro High’s Knitting Club, International Club and Hillsboro Helps. Outside of school, Leslie has been involved with the YMCA Teen Leaders program and Woodmont Christian Church and has worked at Harris Teeter since her sophomore year. We are very happy to welcome Leslie to Belmont University and look forward to being a part of her future accomplishments.

One scholarship will be awarded every other year beginning with the fall 2006 semester. Students can apply September 1 through December 1. The scholarship equals $8,180 for the 2005-2006 academic year and is one of Belmont's 10 largest scholarships in terms of monetary value.

The scholarship will go to a student with academic qualifications that are at or above the university average - The average student at Belmont last fall had an ACT of 25, GPA of 3.5 and SAT score of 1160 - and who has demonstrated financial need.

Students from the geographic area covered by the Community Outreach Scholarship who apply for admission to Belmont will automatically be considered as applicants for the scholarship. Preference will be given to persons graduating from public high schools, including magnet schools. Applications are available online at www.belmont.edu or by calling the Belmont Admissions Office at 460-6785.
