Intellectual Property (IP) Policymaking & The World Intellectual Property Organization: A Summer 2010 Study Abroad Program in Switzerland

Copyrights, Trademarks and Patents (which are all types of IP) are important aspects of creative rights and products (like music, film, and software). Likewise, laws and policy governing the protection of these properties are equally significant. This seminar will provide a brief overview of IP rights, examine pending IP legislation in the U.S., such as the Performance Rights Act, and introduce the role of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), an agency of the United Nations which promotes the protection of IP around the world.

This seminar will also provide preliminary information about a study abroad trip to Geneva, Switzerland in Summer 2010 to study WIPO and IP issues. Additional seminars will be scheduled to provide more detailed information about the study abroad program and IP issues that may be examined during the trip.

Seminar speaker: Sam Reed, who currently serves as the staff attorney for Congressman Jim Cooper (D-TN), with a specific focus on music, entertainment, and intellectual property issues. Mr. Reed worked as an attorney for the Nashville-based law firm of Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis prior to joining Congressman Cooper’s staff.
