Computer Discount Programs

Belmont has two options for everyone to purchase a Dell or Apple Computer at a small discount. As always we recommend you shop around and look for the best deal that fits your pocketbook. Last year Belmont
established an Apple Store with MacAurthority for the campus. Their store is located off of Wedgewood about two miles from campus at: 2018 Lindell Ave. Their web site is:
http://www.macauthority.com/

Below are the two links to purchasing either a Dell or Apple product at educational prices.

Typo Squatting---Watch those URLs when you surf

Mistyped web queries are big business. Typo Squatting is a new term that describes web sites that have names that are similar to popular web sites such as google. These sites use our inability to type to fool web users into
using the wrong web site. The purpose is to make money (i.e. google ads) and also to inject your PC with a virus or trogan to force you to purchase virus protection as one example. Even large corporations such as Microsoft license misspelled sites to generate web traffic. While not illegal it is very frustrating to visit an unintended web site. For novice users they can also be exposed to materials that are not appropriate. So, be sure to read any URL you go to to make sure that www.youtube.com is not www.yuotuhe.com. Its easy to be fooled.
For more information about Typo-squatting go to

Outlook use on campus and off campus

With the move to Outlook for email and Outlook Calendar options for accessing email from on campus and off campus keep expanding. While email has been accessible for over 10 years from off-campus options including access to email from BIC make email easy to get to and easy to manage. If you would like to use Outlook Calendar and also integrate with your cellular data service please contact Network Services. Calendars with Outlook can be shared and you can also access from off-campus or using your PDA. While we have not tested all vendors we have assisted users with AT&T, Verizon and Apple in accessing campus email through private data services that users subscribe to at home.

For more information about email and or calendar call Randy Capps or Dave Elder in Network Services. User Services can also assist you with training in Outlook email and Calendar. Today there are more options then ever for you to stay connected to campus.

Attachment Spam Email on the rise

If you have noticed that more spam is coming your way you are not alone. We are able to block about 90% of all spam on campus, but spammers keep getting smarter. Much of the new spam hitting your email box is called attachment spam. The email has a PDF attachment pushing a stock. To block this type of message it would mean we would have to block PDF attachments which is not practical. If you are interested in learning more about the new attachment spam that we are getting select the article below. Hopefully, our Barracuda spam blocker as well as Sublime spam service will be able to improve the situation. So, for now just delete!!

Sending Shorter URL's Via Email

If you have ever experienced the problem of a very long web address wrapping to a second line in an email, you may have also experienced a return email from a reader telling you that the link did not work. Your options are to use linked text or to insert a shorter URL. If you are not comfortable creating linked text and just want to paste a URL, take a look at TinyURL.com.

Here is How Tiny URL Works
Take a long URL such as http://www.belmont.edu/catalog/undergrad2006jun/index.html and paste that URL into the text box on the tinyURL.com web site. TinyURL converts the original 59 character URL into a 25 character URL: http://tinyurl.com/2hthdm and creates a FREE re-direct that you may use in your email. Of course, the "Tiny URL" does not give your email recipient any indication of where the link is actually taking them, so use this with people you know rather than when you need to broadcast a link to an unfamiliar audience.

Google Groups has a lot to offer everyone

It seems these days electronic or virtual workspaces are growing in importance. Internet services such as Facebook and Myspace provide a way for everyone to communicate with friends. If you need an way to manage a church group, team or project, Google Groups has a lot to offer. While Blackboard is the standard on campus for classes there is the occasionally need to manage a forum or group that includes off-campus stakeholders. If you need a place to securely share documents or manage a discussion board, Google Groups provides an easy, safe and free solution for your group. To set up a group go to groups.google.com to get started.
If you have any questions about using Google Groups for your team or project give me a call or email.

Electronic Communications on Campus

There are a number of ways to communicate electronically on campus. Over the last several years ITS has expanded offerings from simple email to electronic forums or blogs and listservs. If you want to target your email to specific groups of students you can use Targeted messaging in BIC. When a student creates their BIC account the student selects specific majors and interests. Using that selection you can target your message. In addition to email the campus relies heavily on forums such as FYI and News. If you need a traditional listserv you can use Yahoo Groups to manage a list. If you need an online discussion group we use Ezboard to manage an online community. All of these options are free to the Belmont community. For a complete list go to ITS web site.

Going Global with Skype- Easy as 1 2 3

Over the last year I was concerned about my daughter Molly studying abroad this spring. Aside from all the worries a parent goes through Molly was going to be in France for over three months. This is a long long time for a parent. Over the last several weeks we've been able to easily connect to our daughter using Skype, a free Internet conferencing service. To use Skype we chat using a simple headset with microphone and view each other with a webcam connected to each of our computers. My total cost for the webcam and a set of headphones was a total of $50. That's a lot cheaper then $2.20 a minute Bellsouth charges from my home phone just for audio.

The way Skype works is you first download their client and set up your Skype account. You do this for free, and do not need to enter a credit card or bank card number. Once the account is set up can call anyone who has a Skype account. You can also set privacy rights, so that only your contacts in your address book can call you. Skype does all this for free for millions of Internet users everyday. My daughter Molly is lucky in that her apartment in Strasbourg has a wireless in her apartment building. We can contact each other anytime we are online, and I usually wait until she contacts us first. Afterall, isn't the purpoase of study abroad is to be there and not here. So, while she is online, she can not only see and talk with her family here, she is also instant messenging her boyfriend who is at Centre College. Talk about multi-tasking!!!

If you need to stay in contact I can think of no better tool for audio and video confercing on the web. Skype will even allow up to 5 participates to set up a conference with each other. All for the price of downloading their client, and some hardware which you may already have. All communications through Skype are encrypted, so not only is it easy and free, its safe to use.

If you are traving abroad (or anywhere for that matter) and you need to stay in touch for cheap....Skype is a great way to go. If you have any questions on Skype and my experience thus far, please email or give me a call. Or if you want to Skype me, my Skype address is reynoldsr.

How to configure Netscape's Address Auto-Completion

Have you ever had the problem of sending an email to the wrong address and it bounces back? Worse yet, your Netscape may even be saving the bad addresses depending on how your email is configured without you even knowing it. It's a great feature, but you need to manage how you want your email to function. The feature is called Address Auto-completion and it makes your life easier when composing emails, by suggesting email addresses you commonly use so you don't have to type or look up an address. When you compose a new email, Netscape will try to provide matches as you type in the address if you have turned on the auto-completion feature. You may not even know that you have it turned on in your Netscape setup. Here are some hints on how to remove bad addresses or simply turn off the auto-completion feature.

1. How to remove a mis-typed saved address ---
To fully remove a bad address you need to make sure you remove from both Collected addresses as well from your Personal Address book on your system. It is confusing because when address auto-completion is turned on in Netscape setup it collects all addresses, even bad addresses. I had to look both in Collected and Personal address books to remove one address--- but it did remove the offending address on my system.
a. Go to Windows at the top of Netscape Communicator
b. Select Address Books
c. On the left side of the screen, you can see your address books
d. Select Collected Addresses and search for the bad address
e. Select the bad address and press the delete key
f. Next select your Personal Address book and remove any bad addresses

2. To Change Address Auto-Completion setup feature in Netscape:

a. I assume you are using Netscape 7.2 where you can select how you want Address auto-completion to happen.
b. If you want to change how address auto-completion works go to EDIT, Preferences, Addressing options in your Netscape setup.
c.On the right side of the screen, you can unselect Local Address Director Books-- so that Netscape only looks in the Belmont directory, or you can turn if off altogether by unselecting both boxes.
d. Unselect Local Address Books if you want if off

If you have any email questions or need assistance contact me or anyone in Network Services.

Black Worm Virus Update

Warning: A nasty virus is set to trigger this Friday February 3rd. On that day infected machines will have their files overwritten and repair will most likely involve reinstalling the entire system. While it’s unlikely that you are infected, all of us should take steps to ensure that damage from this virus does not occur on our systems.

    What can you do?
  1. Back up important files
  2. Have antivirus software installed and running on your computer (If you don’t currently have an antivirus solution – you may download free software from: www.free.grisoft.com )
  3. If your antivirus is subscription based, you should ensure that it’s not expired.
  4. Make sure your antivirus is currently up to date and running (This infection will often disable antivirus so check that yours is still active)
  5. Run a full system scan.

Three Options for Managing Electronic Groups on Campus

As a sponsor of a student club on campus do you need to email or update the group on a regular basis? Do you have a need to manage a group that includes students as well as non-students? There are three primary technology options for your to consider in managing your group if the group is not class related. For all classroom groups we have WebCT to support your needs. Each of these non-classroom options are web accessible and give you flexibility to manage your group as you need.

1. Set up a campus blog. This is an easy way for you to communicate on the web with your group on a regular basis. There are a number of advantages to a blog including the ability to keep an archive of communications to the group. If someone is interested in being notified when updates are posted on the blog your users can sign up for email notifications. Contact Paul Chenoweth for more information.

2. Set up a forum using Ezboard. Belmont has a hosted account with Ezboard where you can post a question and users can respond. This does not email the group, but users can go to the web and read messages, as well post a response. The forums can be private where only your group members can see the board.

3. Use an old-fashioned listserv. We use a hosted solution for listservs using yahoo groups. This is a web based listserv that users can join by email as well as receive emails from anyone in the group. Users can also read the message at Yahoo groups. The Belmont For Sale Group utilizes Yahoo Groups to host the list.

If you are interested in learning more about how to use any of the methods of managing your particular group please contact Randall Reynolds for more information. There is also more information on the ITS website.

How to protect yourself from current e-mail scams

If you receive an email from a bank or other entity they may not be what they claim to be.
Remember NEVER respond with personal information to a link sent to you in an e-mail from what appears to be your bank, E-Bay or another organization. These sites are fake (referred to as “phishing”) and are set up to obtain personal information from you by appearing to be from legitimate businesses.

If you want to check your account with a bank or other organization, go to the organization’s URL, (not one from inside an email message) and log in to your account. I also recommend you call the bank or vendor directly. Afterall, it is your information and your money.

How to stop those pesky Spam Emails at work

Last summer Network Services contracted with a local Internet company, Sublime, to screen our email for spam. We now filter out over 200,000 spam mails a month through this service. While we have greatly reduced the amount of spam, we can not filter out all spam email. If you have an email that you consider spam please forward the email as an attachment to

stopspam@sublimemail.com

In Netscape Communicator you can forward emails as an attachment by selecting message at the top of your screen. Then select forward and select the attachment option. This will include your spam email as an attachment to sublime.

If you need additional assistance or have questions, please contact Dave Elder at 460-5469

How to stop Telemarketers Targeting your Cell Phone!

Telemarketing calls to cell phone numbers have been a possibility for some time. As with most incoming calls to a cell phone, telemarketing calls can count against the minutes the cell phone owner’s plan and could possibly result in the cell phone owner having to pay for minutes used by unwanted calls from telemarketers.

The FCC maintains a national “Do Not Call” registry for residential and cellular telephone numbers, and commercial telemarketing calls to numbers on this list are prohibited. Information on this program is available on the FCC’s web site at www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/tcpa.html. This site includes a link where you can register your numbers on line. You can also go directly to the registration page, www.donotcall.gov, or call 888-382-1222 from your cell phone to register your cell phone number on this “do-not-call” list.

Dell's Deal of the Week- One Parent's search for a Laptop

I returned a call to a parent whose son plans to attend Belmont next fall. The parent had a few questions about purchasing a laptop for his son. He shared a couple of tricks that may be useful to everyone if you are in the market for a Dell PC or laptop.

1. First, remember the phrase "Deal of the Week". On Dell's web site if you type in the phrase, Deal of the Week, in the search box at the top of the Dell page, you will bring up a hidden Dell web page that has several heavily discounted pachages for laptops and PCs.
The savings look substantial if you stick with the packages that are offered (meaning don't customize--- the savings may disappear!).

2. If you open an account with Dell, you can get another 2% off your purchase. I am not advocating credit cards, but this could save you another few bucks. This parent charged the purchase to the card and was able to pay interest free for 6 months.

3. The parent got a $50 coupon from the Dell salesman at the Mall kiosk. So, when in doubt ask the salesman at the mall for a coupon. can't hurt.

4. He also got free shipping!

For the final total this parent got an Inspiron for a total of $1006 before tax. Not bad for a $1500 system.

Good luck on purchasing your next PC or laptop from Dell, and remember the Deal of the week.

Accessing Email off-campus---- Web mail the way to go

There are a number of ways for you to access your email from off-campus. The simplest way to access email is through BIC. Also, you can access email directly through our web servers by URL, mail.belmont.edu for faculty and staff; pop.belmont.edu for students. All you need to know is your email account and password.

If you want to use Outlook or Netscape you need to configure the incoming and outgoing servers names. For incoming mail use either mail.belmont.edu or pop.belmont.edu. For outgoing mail (mail you send) you must use your ISP's mail server. For example, for Comcast you set the outgoing email server to mail.comcast.net. By using your ISP's mail server email abuse is limited and blocks email relays and reduces spam. If you have any questions about email please contact Randy Capps (5448) or Dave Elder in Network Services (5469).

Laptop Screening Available for Students

Network Services now offers Laptop screening for spyware, viruses and adware by appointment. Students can call Matt Gardener at x460-6893 and schedule a time to drop off a laptop for screening. Network Services also accepts dropoffs anytime between 8 and 4:30 during regular working hours. Please allow at least 24 hours for the screening. They will also give you a CD with some common freeware applications that you can use to get rid of the pesky spyware. Network Services is located on the first floor of Fidelity.

Email Quotas using Web Mail and BIC Email

Please be aware when you use web mail or access mail through your BIC account all email including sent and trashed messages are stored on the server. These messages are counted against any quotas that are set for users. If you get a message saying you have reached your quota you need to clear out some of your old email including mail that is trashed or move to your pop mail on your PC. The current quota is now 30mb which is enough space for most users, but there are a number of exceptions.

To delete email, select folders at the top of your screen, and select the trash and sent folders. You can then select a page at time to delete. In addition, you can clear your trash by selecting the delete button next to the trash folder. If you need assistance on how to better manage your email please contact Randy Capps (x5448) or Dave Elder (x5469) and they can help you manage your email accounts.

AOL browser not compatible with BIC email client

If you are trying to access Belmont email through your AOL account you may experience a problem. There is an incompatibility between the email client used in BIC and AOL's browser. You can get around this by using a different browser to connect to BIC. Just start AOL as you normally would, then open another browser (such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape Navigator, Opera, etc.) and use that browser to open BIC. You can still connect through AOL from off-campus, but will need to open up another browser. AOL modifies Netscape browser to meet their requirements, and as a result you may have problems with accessing other sites on the Internet.
