Welcome to Fall 2005 RESNET Move-In Day Saturday Aug 20th

To: New Students

Technology Services
will be out in full force today to support a smooth transition to campus. We will have staff assisting students moving into the residence halls until about 5pm today. To assist you in your move please note that every residence room has a door hanger with instructions on how to get support. Please go ahead and connect your computer using the black and orange jacks in your room.

Every student has a live ethernet jack to connect a computer. Remember that wireless internet is available just about everywhere on campus, except in the residence halls. We believe that a wired connection is more secure and you will receive better Internet service.

If you have a problem getting on the Internet please fill out a door hanger and place it on your room door. We have staff who will gathering these support hangers starting around 1pm today, and they will work to resolve your problem if at all possible today. In addition, we will be using these door hangers through next week as well to locate students who can not get connected today. Just fill it out and leave on your door today so that our staff can determine who needs assistance. Also, be sure to set up your voice mail in the room. While each room has a shared phone number, every student has a private electronic voicemail box.

TO SET UP VOICEMAIL:
# Dial 5400 and press the # key.
# Enter your voicemail box no.: 9999 as an example

a. Belmont Commons, Bruin Hills, Compton Houses except 1512,or The Hillside students, your mailbox number is the same as the last four digits of your phone number.

b. For Kennedy,Heron, Pembroke, Hail, Compton 1512, Wright & Maddox students that have roommates, your mailbox number is: 9 + the last 4 digits of your phone no. + a '1' or a '2', or a '3'
depending on the alphabetic order of your last name vs. your roommates last name; ex. Baker = 9[2000]1, Douglas = 9[2000]2, Smith = 9[2000]3

For additional assistance check out the ITS web site at www.belmont.edu/its, and you can leave a message at 460-6214. Also, be sure to check out forum.belmont.edu/its for up-to-date information on ITS projects. A support technician will call you and arrange a time to resolve your problem, whether, it be with the network, telephone/voicemail or cable TV.

Network Services testing Perfigo

Network Services is testing Perfigo software to improve the ability for students to better manage their PCs. Perfigo verifies each student's computer for windows patches and virus protection before they can connect to the campus network. This will resolve help resolve network problems on the student network and create a more stable Internet for students. The test is being conducted in Heron starting this month. If the test goes well Network Services plans to roll Perfigo out to the the entire student network over the next two months.

Move-in Day for RESNET off to a smooth start

Saturday was cloudy but the rain held off. Many hundreds of students were able to get online and seemingly without too much hassle. We had the usually number of illegal routers and hubs, and students who could not configure their laptop from a modem to a ethernet connection, but it came off fairly well. As of Monday we have well over 500 students online at any one time. We continue to encourage students to use virus protection and keep critical patches up-to-date.
