Changes in BIC

Comments on recent changes to BIC have been positve... "changes?", you ask?

First of all, the process of adding and delivering campus announcements has been simplified. Kristen Bell, University Marketing and Communications, has been working with a program that we (IT) wrote four+ years ago that was not what we would call user friendly, and alowed us to include only a small number of complete stories to BIC. Kristen continues to handle requests to post campus announcements on BIC, but we now have additional options that deliver a less cluttered announcement section.

bruinweek_its.jpgThe second addition is a Bruins @ Home this week section located just beneath the Today's Calendar section. This is a condensed version of the complete listing of athletic events that displays only events on campus and in the Nashville area for the next 7 days. Watch for automatic updates in the Bruins @ Home this week section and make plans in advance to have a seat for the games!
More changes are on the way as we work to make BIC a more effective tool for the Belmont family.

BIC - Problems accessing email

We have received a few calls and emails from individuals who are experiencing a problem accessing their email through BIC. There is a conflict with Norton Internet Security that is not allowing us to pass data from the BIC interface to the mail server. Note: There is not a problem with Norton Antivirus, just Norton Internet Security.

The web staff and network staff are working to resolve this conflict. If you encounter this problem, mail can be accessed directly using the following links:

Faculty/Staff Email
Student Email

Login is your email id, lastname and initial (i.e. your_emailid@mail.belmont.edu or your_emailid@pop.belmont.edu;

Your password should be the same as your BIC password

We apologize for this inconvenience. We hope to have the problem resolved very soon.

BIC Updated Successfully - WHEW!

Friday evening's upgrade of BIC went smoothly thanks to the efforts of Byron Marsh and Allen Tinius. As strange as it may sound, we hope that you will not notice any difference in the operability of BIC except some increase in speed...but the change is quite significant in terms manageability, security, back-up systems, and redundancy.

We have been working toward this day for several months now and the sigh of relief coming from the library's third floor on Friday night was a big one!

Over the next few weeks, prior to the coming semester, we need to know of any problems that you encounter using BIC. Please call or drop an email to us if you discover functions that are not working properly.

Thank you!

BIC Upgrade

We will be upgrading the bic.belmont.edu server tomorrow (Friday) evening beginning at 6:00PM. The process should be complete by 9:00PM. No other servers on campus will be affected by this. You should be able to access www.belmont.edu, your email account , BannerWeb, and WebCT independently of BIC.

We appreciate your patience during this busy season of preparation for Fall semester,
Paul:)

Campus Calendar Upgrade in Test Mode

Several changes to Belmont's online campus calendar are currently in test mode on BIC2.

For most users of the calendar, the most obvious changes include the light blue highlighting of Official Academic Calendar events and the addition of a small graphic 'c' next to all convocation events. In the previous versions of the calendar, Academic Calendar Events were getting lost in the list of other Notifications. A new category of Academic Events will be added soon to cover events such as lectures, seminars, and bookstore access. Entries submitted under the category of Official Academic Calendar must be entered by the Provost's Office. The graphic 'c' was added to all convocation events, since there are protected events (shown in green) that miight also be convocation events (that are generally shown in red).

For calendar administrators, you will be able you add recurring events via a single entry form. If your club/organization meets at regular weekly/monthly intervals, then this will be useful. If a conflict with meeting space or protected events occurs for any recurring events, you will must resolve the conflict before your event will be accepted.

Event approval emails will now be coming directly from the individual who actually approves your event for the calendar.

Please log into BIC and test these new features. Your feedback should be directed to Paul Chenoweth.

Campus Calendar Version 2.0 Coming Soon

Several new features on the campus calendar should be up and running early in the Fall 2004 semester. Some of these features will only affect calendar administrators, but several of the changes will be noticeable on the bic and www versions of the calendar:

    For the General Calendar
  • Academic Calendar listings will show up more prominently in the Notifications section of each date
  • Protected Events will indicate whether or not the event is for convocation credit or not
    For Calendar Administrators
  • Student Affairs will be able to record private events on an administrator-only-view calendar
  • An option to show some events only on the BIC campus calendar (and NOT on the public/www version) will be available
  • The ability to submit recurring events without having to enter each event separately
  • Event approval emails will come from the individual in Student Affairs who approves an event
  • Event approval will clearly indicate if event and/or convocation have been approved/rejected
