Belmont Responds
Belmont continues its efforts to help dozens of those affected by the flood who are a part of our campus community. We have been in touch in person and by phone on a regular basis with all who are continuing to rebuild their lives. Belmont has provided both hands-on and other assistance to those in need, and will continue to work with them to be supportive. Each person affected by the flooding can take up to 10 days off, with pay, as they strive to recover. In addition, each staff member has been given information on how they can take three paid days of leave to do flood relief work. If all staff do this, Belmont will give 11,000 hours to the community in this way, over and above the efforts of our faculty and students. For those who need a team to come to their home to help, or have other needs or questions, please contact respond@belmont.edu.
Follow Belmont Missions and Service Learning Trip Blogs This Summer
Several Belmont University Summer Missions and Service Learning groups are preparing to depart in the next few days, including the annual sports evangelism team, which is going to Malta this year, along with Belmont’s inaugural trip to the Holy Land. Other destinations include Cambodia and South Africa. Click here to read more about each of the trips and to sign up to receive blog alerts this summer.
Kidz Klimb Will Run Through the Summer
Outdoor Pursuits has an exciting announcement for the Belmont community. Kidz Klimb will be extended through our summer hours! That’s right, you can bring your kids (ages 6 and up) by the Beaman Center to climb between the hours of 1-5 p.m. every Saturday at no cost to you. This is a great way to introduce your kids to climbing as a way to stay active when it gets too hot outside. To enhance the experience, every parent is encouraged to come by the Climbing Wall and get belay certified in order for you to belay your own child and encourage them to make it to the top. If you have any questions, please contact Jamie Zeller at 6262 or you can email him at james.zeller@belmont.edu.

It’s All Belmont To Me – Belmont FYI Feature Profile of the Week

Take Responsibility and Follow Through
Charmaine.jpgThis week’s Belmont FYI Feature Profile of the Week is Charmaine Bickram-Nanan, Program Assistant in the office of General Education. Charmaine has been a part of the Belmont community for nearly two years and was nominated for the second guiding principle, “Take Responsibility and Follow Through.”
Charmaine says she most enjoys Belmont because it is a Christian university and she appreciates her supervisor and colleagues from her area and across campus.
She says that taking responsibility and following through is a big part of her job. “Being the program assistant in Gen Ed, I have to wear so many different hats and I enjoy helping people as much as I can,” she said. “If I cannot answer a question, I try to do the research on the question or try to find someone who can help. If I have to refer a person to someone else, I try to find out what answer they were given so I will have an answer for the next time.”

It’s All Belmont To Me – Belmont FYI Feature Profile of the Week

Walk the Talk
Sybril-Bennett2.jpgThis week’s Belmont FYI feature profile of the week is Dr. Sybril Bennett, Executive Director and Assistant Professor in the New Century Journalism program. She was nominated for the fifth guiding principle – “Walk the Talk” – for the consistent dedication and commitment she demonstrates.
Sybril sees her position as a ministry and says she loves the diversity her position affords. “Nothing stays the same except change and I love it,” she says.
When asked what “walking the talk” means to her, Sybril said we must all do our best to be consistent and dependable. “The older I get, the more I realize that I want to leave a legacy of love, accountability and professionalism,” she said. “To ‘walk the talk’ is just putting the money on the line instead of keeping it in your pocket.”

It’s All Belmont to Me – Belmont FYI Feature Profile of the Week

Over the next few weeks, Belmont FYI will feature a Belmont employee who exemplifies one of the five Guiding Principles of the service initiative.

Show We Care
miss_tonya sm.jpgThis week’s Belmont FYI feature profile is Tonya Granberry, best known around campus as “Miss Tonya.” No doubt, everyone who knows Miss Tonya would agree she is a perfect example of this first Guiding Principle – “Show We Care.” She has been employed with Belmont’s Dining Services for 21 years as cafeteria cashier and is beloved for the care and consideration she shows to each person who passes through her line.
Miss Tonya said she wants people to know they have a friend in the cafeteria, and she is especially loving of new students who are away from home for the first time. She greets people by name and freely offers hugs and support to everyone she meets. It’s not uncommon to hear yourself called “baby” or “sweetheart” as well.
Miss Tonya shows she cares because, she says, “No one needs to walk around here without being loved, hugged, seen or heard. Belmont is my home away from home; Belmont is my family, too.”

A limited number of tickets remain for next Tuesday’s ‘Battle of the Boulevard’ between the Belmont Bruins and Lipscomb at the Curb Event Center. With student and Bruin Club tickets having been distributed – and brisk ticket sales on the heels of a thrilling overtime contest at Lipscomb on January 20th – Belmont Athletic Director Mike Strickland foresees a capacity crowd.
“Belmont and Lipscomb have a special rivalry, and last Friday’s game was yet another classic,” Strickland said. “There was a great atmosphere at Allen Arena and we look forward to providing the same. Tuesday promises to be a memorable night, and we encourage everyone to get their tickets in advance.”
Tuesday will mark the 112th meeting in the history of this storied local rivalry. Belmont has won three of the five meetings since the contest was renewed in 2004.
