Vanderbilt Professor, Vivien Fryd, examines Faith Ringgold's Slave Rape Story Quilt (1984-85) within the context of the anti-rape crisis movement of the 1970s and 1980s, to address violence against the black female and male body during the forced diaspora of the slave trade and on southern plantations.

The feminist art movement of the 1970s profoundly influenced contemporary art practices and shifted the ascribed roles of women in the visual arts. Students in the seminar on Women Artists Throughout History will explore the topic of representations of women by male and female artists before and after the feminist movement in order to trace those changes.
