BFit • BU Featured Profile: Dr. Pete Giordano
This week Belmont FYI introduces a new section to highlight BFit • BU, a campus-wide initiative to encourage fitness by educating students, faculty and staff with various tips and inspiration.
Today's featured fitness interview profiles Dr. Pete Giordano, who joined the Belmont Psychology Department in 1989 and currently serves as department chair.
What is your favorite type of exercise?
My overall favorite is basketball, but my knees don’t take that very well anymore. I’ve basically given it up. My second favorite is outdoor running, but 35 years of pounding have made running outside a challenge as well. So now I like to do individual cardio on the elliptical and the exercise bikes. It hurts less!Have you noticed a difference in yourself?
Yes, I do, and it is as much mental as physical. I can get much more quality “head” work done after I work out. Sitting at my computer for long stretches takes its toll, but working out helps me concentrate and think. Helps the mood as well. Physically, I do it to prevent other injuries. We have a family tradition of going snow skiing out in Utah over the holidays each year. If I didn’t work out on a regular basis, who knows how I would feel after four days on the slopes! My body would probably completely fall apart. With such a busy schedule how do you fit healthy living in?
I schedule it, just like I schedule meetings or classes. Only rarely will I give up this time because something else gets in the way.The Beaman Student Life Center is available for free use to all students, faculty and staff (membership opportunities for alumni, spouses and dependent children are also offered). In addition to a recreational gymnasium, racquetball courts, indoor rock climbing wall and a weight/cardio center, Beaman provides at least 21 weekly group fitness class options and more than two dozen intramural sports and outdoor pursuits programs throughout the year. Nutritional counseling and personal training are also available. For more information, click here.
