The January Teaching Center Symposium is January 8 from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Massey Boardroom. The topic is Thinking Inside Other’s Boxes: Making Connections Between Disciplines. As our society becomes more interdisciplinary, it is our responsibility as educators to bring into our classrooms the impact our disciplines have on society as well as the impact other disciplines have on ours. Through First-Year Seminar, Linked Cohort Courses and Junior Cornerstone Seminar, Belmont encourages students to make connections between disciplines and to gain the necessary knowledge in each discipline in order to understand its impact on others. In order for us to aid students in seeing connections between disciplines, we must first become aware of how various disciplines approach knowledge-making as well as become aware of new advances in the disciplines. This perspective may also be useful as we begin the review of our major programs in terms of content, critical thinking, communication and literacy skills, and ethical reflection.
