Campus Housing Opens Saturday, August 19.

President Fisher will deliver his annual State of the University address to Belmont faculty and staff on Monday, August 21 at 8 a.m. in Massey Concert Hall. Prior to the address, a continental breakfast will be served, beginning at 7:30 in the atrium area between MPAC and Wilson. Offices will be closed so that all staff and faculty may attend. For those offices that must remain open to meet critical student service needs, supervisors are asked to arrange for someone to remain in the office to answer phones and greet students.

Classes begin on Wednesday, August 23.

Belmont’s Division of Student Affairs and the Curb Event Center have teamed together to offer Belmont staff and faculty half price tickets for Wednesday’s Jars of Clay concert. Normal price tickets are $10 per person, but with your Belmont I.D. card, you can get them for $5 each. Visit the Curb Event Center Box Office to get your tickets. Multi-platinum Dove and Grammy Award-winning band Jars of Clay will play the Curb Event Center Wednesday, August 23, as part of their "1000 Wells Project," designed to provide clean water well systems to 1,000 different locations across southern Africa. The project is presented by Blood:Water Mission, the non-profit organization founded by Jars of Clay to foster AIDS relief through holistic community development by promoting clean blood and clean water solutions in Africa. The Nashville Youth Choir announces its 2006-2007 Season. The Youth Choir is a part of the Nashville Children's Choir Program, one of numerous programs of the Belmont Academy, the preparatory division of Belmont's School of Music. Nashville Youth Choir membership is open, by audition, to students in 9-12 for the 2006-2007 school year. Tuition for the season, which runs from August to May, is $250, with tuition discounts available for families with multiple children participating in the Nashville Choir Program. Each semester includes approximately 13 Monday afternoon rehearsals from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m., held in the Massey Performing Arts Center on the Belmont University campus. Auditions for the Nashville Youth Choir will be held by appointment, and immediately preceding the first regular rehearsal Monday, August 21. Sociology professor Andi Stepnick would like to ask the Belmont community to participate in a Bone Marrow Drive, Silent Auction and Bake Sale to raise medical funds for a local eighteen-year-old in need. A 2006 graduate of Sycamore High School in Joelton, he is at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and in need of a bone marrow transplant. The event will take place Saturday, August 26 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at New Hope Free Will Baptist Church in Joelton, Tenn. Additionally, the Josh McGill Cancer Fund has been established. Belle Voci, a semi-professional choral ensemble in residence in the School of Music at Belmont University, is seeking new members. If you are an experienced choral musician and are interested in singing challenging music with this ensemble, contact Dr. Jerry Warren, x6678, warrenj@mail.belmont.edu, Fidelity Hall #401. The fall season includes two concerts - a program of music by Bach and Handel on October 22, and a Service of Lessons and Carols on December 3. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings from 7-9:30 in the Wilson Music Building on campus. Singers commit to one concert at a time, and pledge to learn the music on their own so that rehearsals are a time of making music together. Rehearsals begin on Tuesday, September 5.

Nominations for the common book for all First Year Seminars will be accepted through Monday, September 11. All members of the Belmont community are invited to participate in this process. We will send an email to the Belmont community with an attached form. Nominations must be submitted on the form. Previous common books were The Life of Pi by Yann Martel, and After Such Knowledge by Eva Hoffman, The 2006 book is The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman. Ms. Fadiman will be on campus October 23 to speak to the Belmont community. All submissions must address the following questions (on the form.) 1. Summarize the book. How does the book address “ways of knowing”? Does the book deal with current issues or thematically relevant issues? What is the intended audience of the book? 2. Describe the relevance and/or appeal of the book to students. How will the book both challenge them and enrich their college experience? 3. Is the author (or a related speaker) available for a speaking engagement fall of 2007? 4. Describe how the book could be approached from a variety of disciplines. 5.
