FYI
Bunch Library has developed a tutorial to introduce students to information literacy (i.e. research) skills. This tutorial, called Building Information Literacy Skills (BILS) is based on Texas University’s tutorial, called TILT. BILS is provided through a WebCT course designed by Hannah Little in Bunch Library's Technical Services unit. BILS will hopefully help students to determine when information is needed, efficiently access information, critically evaluate information and its sources, apply legal and ethical standards in using information, and appropriately apply information to one’s needs.
To continue reading about BILS, click below on "continued reading."
BILS is a starting point that Bunch Library hopes to build on to help students become more competent searchers and users of information. The Bunch Library Information Literacy Team (Michael Davis, Hannah Little, Mary Frances Phenicie, Jane Thomas, and Ernest Heard) hopes BILS will particularly assist Belmont faculty in teaching students fundamentals of the research process. The tutorial may also be helpful to staff who are involved in research. Following is pertinent information about accessing and using BILS.
∑ To access BILS, go to the Bunch Library homepage: http://lib.belmont.edu, click on the BILS icon (on the left side of the screen), then follow the screen instructions.
∑ BILS includes a homepage, an organizer page, and four content modules. In addition, there is a glossary, index, and search feature located on the course menu that frames the tutorial.
∑ BILS takes advantage of WebCT content module navigation. The first page of the Introduction module gives detailed instructions for WebCT navigation. This will orient users to the WebCT electronic medium.
∑ BILS also has three Quiz Modules that can be accessed by uploading the quizzes into a WebCT class. (The quizzes are not available for access through the library homepage.)
For further information about BILS, please contact Ernest Heard by telephone (ext. 6424) or send an email to hearde@mail.belmont.edu.
