MBA-Accelerated Program Officially Launched
Earlier yesterday I was pleased to admit our first new student to Massey's innovative MBA-Accelerated program that begins this fall. Our faculty and staff have worked hard this year to prepare for this new cohort of students who will be entering this new full-time MBA program. The curriculum is ideally suited for individuals who are not currently working and who have less than the minimum two years of professional work experience required for admission to our existing MBA-Professional program.
The new program gives us an important new educational product previously missing from our graduate portfolio and allows us to better compete in what has been become an increasingly "crowded" MBA marketplace. The new offering will by no means be a watered-down version of our existing MBA but rather a somewhat more structured and concentrated approach to delivering what will continue to be a high-quality and rigorious academic student experience.
Students in the new program will take their business core courses together in a cohort of 25 that will be delivered during the fall, spring, and summer 10-week sessions. Five-week sessions will include opportunities for pursuing a range of electives, plus the fulfillment of a built-in work experience/internship requirement. To give you a peek at this new schedule, MBA-Accelerated students will begin their program this fall with the following courses in the first 10 week term...
Fall 2009 10-Week Schedule:
MGT 6650 - Organizational Behavior and Management, Mondays, Dr. Jennie Carter Thomas
FIN 6100 - Basic Financial Management, Tuesdays, Dr. John Gonas
MKT 6450 - Advanced Marketing Management, Wednesdays, Dr. Robert Lambert
ACC 6480 - Corporate Financial and Managerial Accounting, Thursdays, Dr. Lee Warren
The fall term will continue with a 5-week session where expectations are for each student to complete two electives in either general business or their chosen field of concentration. MBA-Accelerated students will complete a total of 12 credits during the fall term and enter the spring with an excellent business foundation for enrolling in additional core courses that include: entrepreneurship, international business, leadership, and law and ethics.
Given early interest that is approaching 100 prospect inquiries without any advertising, we expect admission to this new program to be very competitive, especially given we are limiting this first cohort to 25 students. If you know of someone who might be a talented addition to our 2009 MBA-Accelerated class, please encourage them to visit the following link for additional information: http://www.belmont.edu/business/graduatebusiness/index.html
We're also offering a brand new web portal for prospective students to track their progress as they move through the various stages of the application process at BU4U.
By next month I should have additional numbers to report on our enrollments for the summer term. We have already had a record number of applications for the 2009 Summer Accounting Institute and MBA applications are well ahead of last year's figures!

Jack C. Massey MBA Program Ranked #1
Dear Massey School Alumni:

Congratulations! You are now an alumnus of the top rated graduate business program in Nashville. The Massey School MBA was ranked as the Number One MBA program in Nashville in the Scene Magazine’s 2006 “Best of Nashville Readers’ Poll.” Vanderbilt was ranked second and Middle Tennessee State University finished third in the Scene Reader’s Poll. I have ordered a banner and you can expect to see it flying either from the fourth floor of the Massey Business Center or in the front on Wedgwood.
The Best of Nashville ratings are a testimonial to you; we have a strong, loyal and growing alumni base in the Nashville area. During the next year, we expect to have 1000 Massey graduates living in the Nashville MSA. It has been my pleasure to meet many of you at our Massey Mixers, Power Lunches, Ethics and Entrepreneurship Center speaker events and in your companies’ offices. It is the goal of everyone associated with The Massey School to continue to build our Massey alumni network while increasing the value of your Massey degree.
The national reputation of The Massey Graduate School was further enhanced when the MBA/MACC was selected for the third year in a row by The Princeton Review for the annual edition of “The Best 282 Business Schools in America.” Graduate schools of business are selected on admission standards, accreditation metrics and student surveys. Overall, the student's comments are an outstanding reflection on our graduate programs. They praised the graduate faculty's preparation and practical business experience. Students applauded the program’s rigor and appreciated the relevance of their coursework. Students enthusiastically endorsed the Massey methods of learning through teamwork to develop a business mentality.
The national rankings and local rating are an important source of pride and validation for all of us. But, the most important thing is for us to continue to build on our accomplishments. Let’s get better! Thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing all of you in the near future.
All the Best,

Holiday Message from the Dean
I wish everyone a very, merry Christmas and the happiest of New Years. Congratulations to all of the students who graduated in December.
On the 12th Day of Christmas Santa Gave to Me
Twelve new job postings,
Eleven Dell computers,
Ten alumni donors,
Nine new work stations,
Eight miles of carpet,
Seven hundred GMATs,
Six new professors,
Five new MACC students,
Four grad assistants,
Three federal grants,
Two million dollars,
And a ranking in the Princeton Review!
I hope you enjoyed this light-hearted last verse of the Twelve Days of Christmas. Seriously, many people are responsible for our success and are appreciated. I’d like to thank the alumni board members, who served so ably during the past year. A special thanks to the officers of the board, who each volunteered many hours of their time to help make The Massey School a better place. Thanks to all of those who served on and attended meetings of the Graduate Council and I thank the faculty and staff members who are especially devoted to this School and have a personal investment in the success of its students and alumni.
Thanks to all of the former students who understand that our alumni participation percentage is very important in the rankings race and donated to our Alumni Annual Fund drive. An achievement of 18% this past year was a great leap forward and I’m especially proud of the improvement in that area.
The Massey School is a better place because so many of you care and willingly invest your time, talents, and resources in it.

Jack C. Massey - The Legacy Continues
Dear Students and Alumni:
On November 1, 2005 I am inviting you to join us in a celebration of the life and legacy of Jack C. Massey. We plan to gather with area business leaders, Massey family, friends, former associates, alumni, current students, faculty and administration to celebrate a heritage of success that emanated from Mr. Massey and has directly affected so many of us. We will be joining with those who considered him their leader, mentor and role model as well as others who, though never knowing him, have found their lives shaped by his spirit, values and passions.
Jack Massey had a vision for a business school that would meet the needs of a changing corporate environment. With the help of many local business leaders, friends and family, Mr. Massey guided the development of the graduate program at Belmont University. Today, our mission and values reflect Mr. Massey’s belief in practical, ethical and entrepreneurial business education. The content and character of the graduate programs offered at The Massey School are a living tribute to this man who was one of Nashville’s most successful entrepreneurs and prolific philanthropists.
Mr. Massey’s daughter, Barbara Massey Rogers, and her family will be present to introduce Bill Carey, author of her father’s biography to be released this month, Master of the Big Board: The Life, Times and Business of Jack Massey. Clayton and Stuart McWhorter, noted local venture capitalists and entrepreneurs, will also be present to represent those individuals who were mentored by Mr. Massey and who have, in turn, followed their own passions to build personal legacies through entrepreneurship and philanthropy. Also, we will unveil a Massey memorial plaque to be permanently displayed in the lobby of the Massey Business Center. We have invited over one hundred individuals who were interviewed about their experiences with Mr. Massey by the biographer, and expect that many of them will be in attendance.
This is an opportunity for you to embrace an inheritance through your own relationship with Belmont University and the Massey name. This event will provide you with a rare opportunity to see and possibly meet many people who knew Mr. Massey well and who credit him as inspiration along their own paths to success. Ultimately, I hope that you will make a strong connection between our legendary namesake and the value of a Massey MBA or MACC.
Plans are for the publisher to have books available for sale, in the event you would like to have a copy signed by the author. Come prepared to stay and network with the extended Massey community. I look forward to seeing you there and hope you feel the power of the Massey name alive in the room.
All the Best,
Pat Raines
Dean and Professor of Economics
