Numbers for Fall
Greetings, and I hope each of you is doing well and enjoying some wonderful weather in Nashville (for those of you still local). We've had another productive summer here at The Massey School, but the term is quickly winding down, with fall fast approaching. As one group of students returns from a study abroad experience in June (see photo to left), another group is packing to head out in less than 2 weeks.
Summer classes conclude this week, and our August hooding ceremony (17 graduates) is set for Thursday, August 13 at 6:30 p.m. Here's a short bulleted list of some of the "numbers" we're currently tracking:
- 56 new MBA/MACC students to date have been admitted to the graduate school for the fall term;
- 36 students (our largest group ever) will complete the Summer Accounting Institute this Wednesday;
- 30 (or less) is the ranking we're hoping to achieve in BusinessWeek's part-time MBA rankings due out this fall;
To continue reading...
- 26 students depart August 15 for a study-abroad trip to Dublin/London with Dr. Susan Taylor;
- 16 alumni "audited" the new Business Mediation class taught last spring (the next opportunity is this fall);
- 14 students are scheduled to begin our inaugural Accelerated MBA (full-time) program this fall;
- 6 students just completed the Know Europe study abroad experience through Normandy Business School;
- 4 MBA students will become our first recipients of the new Massey Scholars Award ($10K scholarship);
- 2 separate new student orientations are scheduled for later this month in order to accomodate enrollment growth; and
- 1 MBA student (announced at hooding) just earned our highest score ever on the ETS MBA Major Field Test exit exam.

Sign up for TEAM MASSEY in the Dragon Boat Race
Join the TEAM MASSEY effort in the 2009 Dragon Boat Race, August 22nd on the Cumberland River to benefit the Cumberland River Compact.
Deadline to sign up is August 14th; email teresawade@comcast.net for more information and to register.
Several Massey professors have offered their support and Dr. Finley will be our boat drummer! We still need a few students, alumni, friends or family members to fill the team.
Details below...
Dragon Boat racing differs from other team sports in that no one person on the team is more important than another. Winning a Dragon Boat race hinges on how well a team works together at paddling in sync, and how well each paddler perfects the stroke technique. The popularity of Dragon Boat racing has exploded, with an estimated 50 million people participating in the sport around the world each year.
For more info and clips of past dragon boat races: www.nashvilledragonboat.com.
You’ll love this event and race site. Riverfront Park located at the foot of Broadway in downtown Nashville is the perfect venue for both paddlers and spectators. A large viewing area and “paddlers row” are within walking distance to top restaurants, snack bars, parking, souvenir shops, Country Music Hall of Fame, the Ryman Auditorium, and many other Music City attractions. So bring the whole family and plan on spending the day!
Activities
• The “dotting the eye” of the dragon ceremony will kick off the races on Saturday morning at 8 a.m.
• Throughout the day, music and arts will be a part of the festival. Check the program for times and places.
• The races will run approximately every 20 minutes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Winners will be announced and honored during the closing ceremonies in the Main Festival Tent, starting at 5 p.m.
• Food and other vendors will be present at various locations throughout the day.
Join our TEAM MASSEY effort in the boat or as a cheerleader on the river bank!
Attention Alumni: Mediation Class Open
A recently added class, Mediation For Today's Business Leaders, has proven to be popular with both current students and alumni. Sixteen alumni sat in on the new course the first time it was offered this past spring. Currently, a limited number of spots are available in this course for the fall session. The class is held in the 5-week session, and the first class will be Tuesday, November 10. Decision Making and Negotiation Skill (MGT 6940) is a prerequisite.
If you would like to audit the class, please contact Melissa Mitchell at melissa.mitchell@belmont.edu.

Massey and volunteers from CAT Financial, led by Massey Alum Aaron Murdock, are teaming up once again. We will be working on day 3 of the typical 8-day build process and will install siding, soffits, and other fixtures in and outside our assigned house. Ronald McDonald House Thanks Massey Volunteers!
On July 11th the families residing at the Ronald McDonald House were treated to a barbeque-style lunch, compliments of volunteers comprised of Massy students, alumni, faculty, friends and family. Ronald McDonald House relies almost entirely on donations and volunteer support for its daily operations. An important part of volunteer support is the supply of meals.
Families from all over the country stay at the House while their sick children receive treatment at one of the area hospitals. Sadly, the Nashville Ronald McDonald House stays full (35 people) most of the time. Fortunately, the House provides a wonderful environment for the families to stay close to their loved ones during a difficult time.
From talking to the residents it seemed everyone really enjoyed the food we provided. Kroger supplied us with 40 pounds of hamburger and side items from the deli. The remainder of the food was purchased through donations from Massey students, Dr. Stan York, and Dr. Joe Alexander. Special thanks go to LaDonna Boyd for baking the cookies, to Russ Cornwall and Brett Printz for manning the grill, and to Eric Jolly for keeping the flames under control!
With 17 volunteers, we were slightly overstaffed (which was a great problem to have!), but with Dr. York’s operational management skills, all went smoothly. On behalf of the residents and staff at Ronald McDonald House, thanks to all the volunteers for making it a great event!
If you would like to learn more about the Ronald McDonald House or to volunteer on an individual basis, you may visit the website at http://www.rmhnashville.com/.
