Massey July Update

The word? Enrollment. It seems these days in the Massey Graduate School Office, each day consists of following up with or interviewing new student prospects for what are now three distinct graduate programs we offer. When you graduate almost 75% of your student population in just a year and a half, you spend a lot more of your time then recruiting and admitting a brand new group of professionals each enrollment cycle.

This year, in addition to our Professional MBA and MACC programs, most of you are aware that we have also added a new Accelerated MBA program for those individuals with high academic potential but without the requisite professional experience necessary for admission into our PMBA program. To date, I am very pleased with the quality of this new group of students. In addition to some of our recent Belmont COBA graduates who are enrolling in this new program, we are drawing interest from a number of international students as well. Yesterday, I interviewed an applicant from Canada, and we are even working with one individual from Turkey. This should prove to be a talented and yet very diverse cohort of students who will add a whole new dimension to our graduate programs.

A little farther down in this edition of the eLeader, you will read about our current group of Summer Accounting Institute (SAI) students. We expect that with the size of this year's class entering the MACC program in the fall, we should be the largest MACC program in the State of Tennessee--a first for The Massey School.

Dublin photo.jpgAnother group of Massey students is currently preparing for the next study-abroad experience. Dr. Susan Taylor is leading 25 individuals next month on a trip with a primary focus on Ireland, yet with a brief set of activities in London as well.

And finally, if you haven't already done so, be sure to sign up for our Belmont University Massey Graduate School of Business at LinkedIn.com. Our group has arleady grown to 321 alumni and students, with new individuals adding each week. Our goal is to reach 500 by the end of this calendar year, and we are currently on pace to exceed that number. LinkedIn groups are a great tool for expanding your professional network as well as keeping up with current job opportunities.

I hope are having a wonderful and yet productive summer. I look forward to seeing you soon at one of our upcoming networking or power luncheon events. Joe

Students Near Half-Way Mark in SAI

A record number of students were admitted to the 2009 Summer Accounting Institute and have been working for more than a month toward program completion. Designed as an intense immersion in accounting for those that did not pursue accounting studies in their undergraduate degree programs, the program fills a unique need.

"The SAI is a perfect fit for someone transitioning into accounting from another career, as I am doing," says participant Wendy Stallings. "It streamlines the major material covered in an undergraduate degree into one intense summer, so that I don’t have to earn a second bachelor’s degree before beginning the MACC program."

When asked about her experience, Wendy reiterates what many SAI participants have said: The program is intense.

"Or maybe very intense would be more appropriate. When you dream about journal entries and T accounts (as I did the other night), you know you’re doing a lot of accounting."

All the work serves to get the students where they want to be, as quickly as possible. It also serves as a great networking and acclimation tool for those entering the MACC program.

"Getting to meet a wide range of professors and working with students from a variety of backgrounds makes for a great introduction to Belmont," says Wendy. "It also gives you a chance to explore the wide array of career options available to accountants before making any major decisions about career paths."

Massey Students Travel to Know Europe

Shoreline at Entretat.jpg Massey MBA student Teresa Wade writes of her month-long travel as a participant in the Know Europe international trip. Here is a glimpse into her experience...

Friday morning started with a lecture from Michel Burquois, a European product marketing expert who works with an organization called OIV, which is similar to the United Nations, but focuses only on the wine industry. His résumé includes participation in the team that created Nestlé’s Kit Kat. He was quite knowledgeable on campaign and marketing development, an invaluable resource not only for our project, but a great contact for future reference.

In the afternoon our group took a short bus ride to experience the Cliffs at Etretat. The photos don’t do justice to this massive place, but will hopefully give you an idea of the scenery…. It was truly amazing.

Our hike lasted about two hours from the time we hiked to the top and then down and around through the small town. This was another of Claude Monet’s vantage points during his time in the Le Havre, France region.

Our path took us down into the town of Etretat, which was quaint and cute, with beach cafés with a beautiful view of the cliffs.

After a morning run, class, group project work, and an exhilarating hike at the cliffs, I was beat. I worked on my project a couple of hours and hit the hay. I am up early this morning, playing golf with Perry and Noel from the University of New Orleans, at a course located at the cliffs where we were yesterday. It should be an experience for sure. The wind will be wild, but the scenery incredible…. And how many opportunities will I get to play golf in France?

Massey students get crankin', give a hand to local charity

Crankin09logo.jpgOn behalf of the Martha O’Bryan Center, a big Thank You goes out to the twenty Belmont volunteers who gave their time on June 14th to help make the 24th annual “Purity Miss Martha’s Ice Cream Crankin” event a huge success. It was a beautiful day to volunteer and have a chance to sample some amazing ice cream flavors. There were over 2,700 people who attended the event which raised $50,000 for the Martha O’Bryan Center’s operating budget.

For those of you who have never been to the “Crankin”, local folks prepare homemade ice cream and compete for the honor of the winning recipe to be featured as a Purity ice cream flavor. This year’s winner was Susan Williams (no, not our own Dr. Susan Williams) of Franklin, TN, with her recipe for “Raspberry Chocolate Truffle”. If you would like to learn more about the Martha O’Bryan Center or to volunteer on an individual basis, you may visit the Center’s website at http://www.marthaobryan.org/.
