College of Business Career Development Center News
Almost daily we are reminded of the current economic situation and the impact on the job market. The College of Business Career Development Center has developed a schedule of events to assist students and alumni in these challenging times. We have added evening hours on Tuesdays and are offering a weekly seminar for those Massey students/ alumni that find themselves in career transition. The workshop provides a process for job search, a demonstration of our exclusive online resources and best practices to engage your network. The workshop will also be offered the evening of March 3rd for those who cannot attend one of the Thursday afternoon sessions. Of special interest in February are the Nashville Career Fairs event (Feb. 10th) and the “Seven Secrets of the Hidden Job Market” Lunch and Learn Webinar ( Feb. 26th). Power Lunch with Ozborne-Hessey Logistics
The March Power Lunch for Massey students will be with Scott McWilliams, CEO of OHL, Inc (Ozborne-Hessey Logistics) on March 31, 2009, 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The lunch will be held on campus in the Fourth Floor Massey Boardroom. Scott McWilliams is the Chief Executive Officer of Ozburn-Hessey Logistics. He has served in that capacity since 2001. Scott previously served as President and COO from 1996-2001 and as VP of Operations from 1990-1996. Prior to joining OH Logistics, Scott worked for the Kroger Company and Super X Food and Drug in a variety of warehousing, transportation and supply chain management positions over almost a decade.
Scott is an active member and speaker in several industry associations, including the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), the Warehousing Education and Research Council (WERC), eye for transport and the International Warehouse and Logistics Association (IWLA). He serves on the editorial advisory board of DC Velocity Magazine, as Past President of the Southeastern Warehouse Association, and on the Board of Directors of WERC, QPSI, Franklin Synergy Bank and OH Logistics.
Scott is also very involved in supporting his community. He serves as a Board member of The United Way of Middle Tennessee and has also served on the Board of Second Harvest Food Bank, as Board President for Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross Disaster Response Team and as a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee. Scott has a B.S. degree in Logistics from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

The Graduate Council in conjunction with several alumni have worked to bring community service opportunities to students and alumni by setting up the logistics and organizing a few events throughout this year. Below is a summary of the line-up and we welcome and encourage you to get involved and give of your time to these organizations devoted to making Nashville a better place.

Thursday, April 2, 6:00 to 9:30 pm
This event is the Tennessee region's premiere green event to promote sustainability in building, energy, transportation, home, office, waste elimination, and the environment. It is held at Lipscomb University and volunteers can attend the keynote address by Gary Hirshberg, President and CEO of Stonyfield Farms. Volunteers are needed to serve as ushers, ticket collectors, greeters, and exhibit supervision.
Deadline to sign up for this event is March 15th.
Sunday, June 14 The 2009
Purity Miss Martha's Ice Cream Crankin' will be held Sunday June 14 and is the signature fund raiser for the Martha O’bryan Center. The Martha O'Bryan Center empowers children, youth, and adults in poverty to transform their lives through work, education, employment and fellowship. Massey student volunteers for this event are needed for two hours to help with set-up, ticket sales, serving ice-cream, parking, and other support functions for the event.
Saturday, July 11
The Ronald McDonald house offers lodging and support for families whose seriously ill children are receiving treatment locally. It provides families a way to stay together, in proximity to the treatment hospital caring for their children. Breakfast, lunch, and dinners are provided at the House by volunteers. About 10-15 Massey student volunteers are needed for this event to supply burgers and “grill skill” for an outdoor barbeque lunch.
Saturday, September 19
Massey and volunteers from CAT Financial, lead by Massey Alum, Aaron Murdock, are teaming up once again to build for Habitat for Humanity. We will be working on day 3 of the typical 8-day build process and will install siding, soffits, and other fixtures in and outside our assigned house. This is a fun day to trade in your desk job for a hammer and tool-belt, and to work hand in hand with people in need to help provide an environment for positive change.

Massey Team Competes in Social Venture Competition
Massey Graduate School has a team entered in the Dell Social Innovation Competition. Massey MBA students Eric Jolly, Andres Tapia, and Amy Thran Wolanski have created a social venture that implements and manages bike sharing programs for cities, businesses and universities (for more on bike sharing go to <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_bicycle_program).
Semifinalists are selected by combining the top ideas voted most popular by the public and ideas chosen by the competition judges. The 100 semifinalists move on to round two of the competition. Ultimately, the winning team is awarded $50,000 to launch their business concept. We need your help, so please support the Massey team by doing the following:

Golf weather is just around the corner, and Massey students and alumni are invited to participate in the first Massey Golf Network Outing on Saturday, March 21st.

President & CEO of FedEx Speaking on Campus
The Society of International Business Fellows, in conjunction with The Massey Graduate School of Business and the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, are hosting an exclusive presentation by Ed Clark, President and CEO of FedEx Trade Networks on Thursday, March 5, 2009. He will be speaking on “A Perspective on International Trade and the Global Economy”. A continental breakfast will be served at 7:15 a.m., with the program to follow from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. in the Gordon E. Inman Center, 4th Floor, Frist Lecture Hall.

Scarlett Leadership Institute Workshop Series
At the Scarlett Leadership Institute, we see ourselves as a gathering place for all who seek to learn and lead. Our programs model a “learn it today, apply it tomorrow” mindset where students and organizations are encouraged to learn from world class leaders, as well as from each other. This spring we have developed a series of workshops providing one- to two-day sessions on a variety of topics.

Fast Pitch Continues...
PitchCamp is a half-day intensive and interactive workshop with seminars led by Jeff Stamp, world renowned think-tank innovator, and Scott Schwertly, owner of award-winning presentation design company Ethos3 Communications. Dr. Stamp will lead the group through a seminar on idea generation during the first half of the afternoon, with Mr. Schwertly then showing how best to present your business idea during the latter part of the day.
FastPitch will host two more events for entrepreneurs. The first is OpenPitch, where participants will each present a 60-second pitch of a business idea. From this event, finalists will be selected to compete in FastPitch. At this event, a panel of judges from the academic, investor and entrepreneurial community will judge the 60-second pitches. Winners will be chosen by the public and the judges’ panel to receive cash prizes or a chance to present to the Angel Capital Group for funding.
PitchCamp is free for all Massey students and will be held Friday, February 6 from 1 – 5 p.m. at Belmont University. OpenPitch will take place on Saturday, March 7, from 1 – 4 p.m, and has a $35 entry fee. The final FastPitch event will be held the evening of Tuesday, March 31.
