Successful Power Lunch at Capella Healthcare
This month, MBA students visited Capella Heathcare headquarters in Cool Springs where we met Denise Wilder Warren who currently serves as Senior Vice President and CFO of Capella Healthcare.
Capella was founded in 2005 with a vision of providing clinical, financial and operational expertise to non-urban hospitals around the country. Today, the company runs five hospitals: three in Tennessee, one in Oklahoma and one in Washington.
Warren joined Capella in October 2005 as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. She has worked for many well-known companies, such as Ernst and Young, Merrill Lynch, and Gaylord Entertainment. Just like the students in the Massey MBA program, she worked hard to succeed, taking evening classes while holding a full-time job. Warren earned her Bachelor of Science in Economics from Southern Methodist University in 1992 and went on to earn her MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1996. Studying at Harvard was very intensive. After class she would work at least nine hours each day on her cases or papers. Her experience at Harvard not only expanded her knowledge, but connected her to a network of colleagues with whom she still keeps in contact.
Warren's guiding philosophy in life is to "enjoy what you do." She loves her job. She wakes up at 5 a.m. every morning for an hour of jogging and stays energetic the whole working day until 7 p.m. She has a husband, a six-year-old daughter and a Labrador Retriever.

Welcome from Dean Alexander
I am delighted to be here on campus as The Massey School's new associate dean, and I continue to be impressed with the quality of graduate programs that so many here have helped to build over the last two decades. As I interviewed MBA student applicants over the summer, it was encouraging to hear first-hand how the outstanding reputation of the Massey program within the local business community is what led these potential students to a decision that Belmont's Massey program was indeed the right vehicle to carry them to that next professional level.
Our program's reputation began with the legendary status of our namesake, Jack C. Massey, and has been nurtured and strengthened through the efforts of a highly-talented and dedicated faculty and staff who are committed to carrying out the unique mission we have as a graduate business program with a Christian foundation. And our new faculty hires that you will read about elsewhere in this issue offer further evidence that our program is continuing to move in the right direction. In short, excellence attracts excellence.
We entered the fall semester by welcoming to campus a talented group of incoming graduate students. This fall's entering MBA class boasts averages of seven-plus years of work experience and a 550 mean GMAT score. The entering MACC class averages almost six years of work experience and a mean GMAT score of 600. Furthermore, we are now essentially tied with the University of Tennessee-Knoxville for having the largest MACC program in the State of Tennessee. Our combined MBA and MACC student populations comprise the largest group of graduate students we have enrolled in at least five years.
We are off to a great start for the new academic year, and I look forward to meeting as many of you as are able to attend when we celebrate the renovation of the 3rd Floor Study Area on October 1st from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. In the meantime, as you think of ideas for how we can continue improving the program, please call (460-6480) or send us an e-mail (alexanderjf@mail.belmont.edu) with that information. As always, we appreciate your continued support!

Best-selling Author, Dennis Bakke, to Speak September 25
Hear a Powerful Speaker and Get a Free Copy of JOY AT WORK!
What if you worked in a company where 40,000 employees in 31 countries sought not the “fun” of "casual Friday" but the joy of making decisions on Monday? You’d work at a company like AES—the worldwide energy giant that Dennis Bakke co-founded in 1981 and built into a multi-billion dollar company.
Mr. Bakke, author of the best seller JOY AT WORK: A Revolutionary Approach to Fun on the Job, will speak at a September 25, 2007 event sponsored by the Belmont Center for Business Ethics. His topic will be “Ethics as a Foundation for Joy At Work.”
Bakke’s passion is to “make work exciting, rewarding, stimulating and enjoyable.” Does your workplace exhibit these characteristics? JOY AT WORK explores how “to create a workplace where every person from custodian to CEO has the power to use his or her God-given talents to experience joy." Bakke emphasizes that principles and values must guide all decisions in the business world.
His presentation will be in the Frist Lecture Hall on the 4th floor of the Gordon E. Inman Center on Wedgewood Avenue. Free parking will be available in the garage under the building. There will be a networking reception at 4:30 p.m. followed by Mr. Bakke’s presentation at 5:00 p.m.
The event is free, but seating is limited. If you would like to reserve a seat and find out about receiving a free copy of Bakke’s book, send an email to cobaethics@mail.belmont.edu

Massey Students Experience the "Celtic Tiger"
The international trip for the summer semester had students travelling to Ireland for an opportunity to explore the story of the booming economy of the Celtic Tiger and experience Irish culture first hand. Dr. Robert Lambert and 22 MBA and MACC students traded record setting heat in Nashville for the the much cooler Irish climate from August 11 to 18.
The group arrived in Dublin on Sunday morning where we were treated to a tour of the western coast. Our first company visit on Monday morning was with Enterprise Ireland where we received an overview of the Irish economy and discussed the government programs that are available to drive and sustain business in the country. Tuesday morning had us visiting Alltech, an international biotechnology company that focuses on animal health and performance. Alltech has their international headquarters in Lexington, KY and offered an interesting perspective on the relationship between agriculture and technology. Tuesday afternoon involved a presentation by marketing executives at Jameson Whiskey and a tour of their historical facility. On Wednesday morning we met with a partner from the accounting firm BDO Simpson Xavier before continuing on to the city of Limerick. Thursday morning brought the Limerick City Enterprise Board, which works with small, local businesses to stimulate the local economy. Thursday afternoon was a highlight of the trip as we visitied the Eastern coast of Ireland. The Cliffs of Mohrer and surrounding country were spectacular, even if the roads were a bit narrow! We wrapped our trip up on Friday with a visit to Dell, where we toured the production facility and spoke with management about the role of the Limerick office in supplying the EU.
The trip was a resounding success and wonderful educational experience. Both the company vists and the cultural activites offered a unique glimpse of the Celtic Tiger that will be remembered by all.

Farewell to Cost/Price
The final MGT 6600, Product/Service Cost/Price Management, class was held during the summer semester. As part of the course experience, students visited Pal's Sudden Service in Kingsport, TN. Pal's is the only food service company to ever win the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award.
Following a presentation and question and answer period with company CEO Thom Crosby, students were given a tour of a Pal's location during the peak of the lunch hour rush, where they were able to see the principles of quality employed by the firm in action. "What really stood out for me was the way they define their business," said Chris Gray. "Pal's see's themselves first as a manufacturing firm, second as an educational institute and finally as a food service company." Pal's aligns the time and effort expended by managers along these three lines, keeping managers involved on the front lines, mentoring staff and staying in contact with customers. The reward systems of the firm are also closely aligned with these perspectives, which keeps the strategic focus of the company clear and relevant to each manager and employee.
The visit to Kingsport highlighted and reaffirmed many of the themes of the course and allowed students to see first hand how a company in any industry can operate at a high level and with an imperative for quality.
The group also visited the John Deere manufacturing facility in Greeneville, TN in the afternoon. The plant produces walk behind mowers and lawn tractors. The Greenville operation was recognized in early 2006 as a finalist for the Shingo Prize for manufacturing excellence, as well as being a recipient of a Tennessee Quality Award.
